When you’re playing on the water this summer, here is some food for thought.

Middle school Gifted and Talented students ended the year with a splash as they tested their engineering skills at the SAISD Middle School Boat Regatta — a high-stakes engineering challenge where students have limited time to build a seaworthy vessel using only cardboard, duct tape, and trash bags.

It was the second cardboard boat regatta of the year, following the success of the high school contest in the fall. Thanks to support from the SAISD Foundation, our middle school students also had the chance to put their skills to the best at the San Antonio Natatorium during the last week of school.

A huge shoutout to all the competing teams from Harris, Poe, Rhodes, Rogers, Longfellow, and Whittier Middle Schools.

And special congratulations to the winning teams:

🏆1st Place & Most Creative: Poe MS (Group #1)
🥈2nd Place: Rogers MS
🥉3rd Place: Poe MS (Group #2)

The event was led by GATE Specialists Mr. Pena and Ms. Jordan, with massive support from the GATE team, and mentorship from engineers at SAWS.

Los estudiantes talentosos y sobresalientes de secundaria cerraron el año con broche de oro poniendo a prueba sus habilidades de ingeniería en la carrera de barcos de las secundarias de SAISD, un desafío de ingeniería de alto nivel donde los estudiantes tienen tiempo limitado para construir una embarcación navegable usando solo cartón, cinta adhesiva y bolsas de basura.

Fue la segunda carrera de barcos de cartón del año, tras el éxito del concurso para preparatorias en el otoño. Gracias al apoyo de la Fundación SAISD, nuestros estudiantes de secundaria también tuvieron la oportunidad de poner a prueba sus habilidades en el San Antonio Natatorium durante la última semana de clases.

Un gran aplauso a todos los equipos participantes de las escuelas secundarias de Harris, Poe, Rhodes, Rogers, Longfellow, y Whittier.

Y muchas felicidades a los equipos ganadores:

🏆1° lugar y el más creativo: Poe MS (Grupo #1)
🥈2º lugar: Rogers MS
🥉3° lugar: Poe MS (Grupo #2)

El evento fue dirigido por los especialistas de GATE el Sr. Pena y la Srta. Jordan, con un gran apoyo del equipo GATE, y la tutoría de los ingenieros de SAWS.

A partnership between Our Lady of the Lake University and the Bexar County Audubon Society gave construction students at Lanier High School the opportunity to support the conservation of Chimney Swifts by helping preserve critical migratory and nesting habitat along San Antonio’s Westside creekways. Explore the 20-foot nesting tower they built in time for the spring migration, then tune in again during the fall migration to see how students at Rodriguez Montessori Elementary School become citizen scientists and bird watchers, tracking the Chimney Swift’s remarkable journey.

Una colaboración entre Our Lady of the Lake University y Bexar County Audubon Society dio a los estudiantes de construcción de Lanier High School la oportunidad de apoyar la conservación de los vencejos de chimenea ayudando a preservar los fundamentales hábitats migratorios y de nidificación a lo largo de las vías de los arroyos del lado oeste de San Antonio. Explore la torre de nidificación de 20 pies que construyeron a tiempo para la migración de primavera, luego sintonice de nuevo durante la migración de otoño para ver cómo los estudiantes de Rodríguez Montessori Elementary se convierten en científicos ciudadanos y observadores de aves, siguiendo el extraordinario viaje del vencejo de chimenea.

As VIA Metropolitan Transit works on its Rapid Green Line service, which will be launched in 2028, the transportation organization has selected art from 42 district students to turn into custom windscreens at bus stop shelters serving the new rapid transit line. The VIA Green Line Art in Transit contest specifically invited students whose middle and high schools are within an approximate one-mile distance from the future Rapid Green Line, which includes Edison High School (pictured).

Mientras que VIA Metropolitan Transit trabaja en su servicio «Rapid Green Line», que se lanzará en 2028, la compañía de transporte ha seleccionado las obras de arte de 42 estudiantes del distrito que se pondrán en los paneles de las paradas de autobús de la nueva línea de transporte rápido. Brackenridge HS and its Mariachi Aguila honored retiring Superintendent Dr. Jaime Aquino with a special presentation and serenade at the school’s graduation ceremony.
The SAISD Familia will be forever grateful to Dr. Aquino for his heartfelt service to our students and staff.

La escuela secundaria Brackenridge y su grupo «Mariachi Águila» rindieron homenaje al superintendente Dr. Jaime Aquino, que se jubila, con una presentación especial y una serenata durante la ceremonia de graduación de la escuela.
