You’ve seen the campaign signs. You’ve seen the candidate posts. You’ve seen the names on the ballot.

But have you ever wondered what actually happens behind the scenes of a local campaign?

This election season, I’m launching **Behind the Ballot**—a candid look at what it really takes to run for local office in Schertz.

I’ll take you along for the parts most people never see:

• Filing and campaign paperwork
• Knocking on doors and talking with residents
• Putting together signs and campaign materials
• Working with volunteers
• Preparing for forums and community events
• The long days, unexpected moments, and lessons along the way
• And eventually, Election Night itself

I also want to bring in other voices—former elected officials, candidates, volunteers, residents, and people who understand our community—to talk about what running for office and serving actually involves.

My goal is bigger than showing you my campaign. I want to help demystify local elections, encourage civic participation, and give people an honest look at grassroots public service.

And I want **you** to help shape the series.

Building bridges starts with conversation.

I had a great opportunity to sit down with the leadership of and to talk about our schools, our community, and the values we share when it comes to supporting students and families.

We may serve our community in different roles, but we all want many of the same things: strong schools, engaged families, safe communities, and opportunities for every student to succeed.

Relationships matter. Listening matters. And sometimes the most important progress starts simply by sitting down together over coffee and getting to know one another.

Thank you to the Wilder and Paschal PTC leaders for the conversation, the ideas, and your commitment to our families. I’m looking forward to continuing to build these relationships.

What is one thing you think city and school leaders can do together to better support our students and families?

This morning was all about meaningful conversations and making connections!

Norma J. Paschal Elementary PTC had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Westbrook from Schertz City Council at Americana Coffee & Espresso Bar.

We talked about what’s happening on our campus, shared some of the things that make Paschal such a special place, and discussed ways our school and local community can work together to support our students and staff.

We believe some of the best ideas come from simply getting together, listening to one another, and finding ways to turn conversations into action. We’re excited about the possibilities that can come from connecting our school with local leaders and businesses.

A huge thank-you to Mr. Westbrook for making time to meet with us and for showing genuine interest in our school community. We’re looking forward to continuing the conversation and building relationships that benefit Paschal and our entire community!❤️🤍💙

I have peppers, citrus trees, sugar cane, potatoes, mulberry trees, grape plants , opal basil and purple onions, and a few surprise "volunteer" plants that decided to grow on their own.
Gardening has a way of teaching leadership lessons if we pay attention:
You have to prepare the ground/soil.
You have to be patient.
You have to support growth differently depending on what each plant needs.
You have to make to make room for surprises and failures.
And sometimes, the strongest things grow where you least expect them.

That's true in the garden, in leadership, and in our community.

One of the things I enjoy most about serving in Schertz is getting to meet people who are quietly making our community better, more connected, and more welcoming.

I recently had the chance to visit with Melissa from Salsa Fix, who offers salsa dance lessons at the Schertz Senior Center. What stood out to me was not just the dancing, but the joy, confidence, and connection that come from creating spaces where people can learn something new and spend time together.

As part of National Cities, Towns, and Villages Month, I wanted to highlight the people and programs that remind us what makes a city special. It is not just streets, buildings, or services — it is people like Melissa who bring energy and purpose to our community.

May is National Cities, Towns, and Villages Month — a time to celebrate the communities we call home and the people, places, and shared spaces that make them special.

I'm sharing a short video series highlighting a few of the things that make Schertz such a great place to live, work, visit, and raise a family.

Video 1 begins with one of my favorite parts of our community — our parks. Schertz is blessed with more than 30 parks, athletic fields, and recreation facilities where families gather, children play, residents walk and exercise, and neighbors connect.

Spring is the perfect time to get outside, visit a local park, enjoy the trails, support youth activities, or simply take a moment to appreciate the public spaces that help make Schertz feel like home.

Sharing a message and saying thank you to Schertz and neighboring communities for allowing me an opportunity. I have citrus trees, pine trees, malabar spinach, Japanese blueberry, magnolia trees, moringa, and peppers of all sorts trying to learn and produce.
