Law Enforcement Activity – UPDATE

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office will remain on scene to conduct its investigation. The first phase of the operation was conducted safely, and there are no known threats to the community.

We appreciate the continued support of our residents as we work to ensure our community remains safe.

All outlying road closures, if any, and traffic restrictions have been lifted or adjusted; however, residents and motorists are urged to exercise caution around emergency vehicles and equipment that may still be present in the area.

Law Enforcement Activity – Avoid the Area

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division is currently conducting law enforcement activity in the 400 block of Rabbits Foot Road, West Point. Personnel from several specialized units, including the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), SWAT, and the Calaveras Narcotics Enforcement Unit (CNEU), are assisting with the operation.

There is no known threat to the public at this time; however, as a precaution, residents and motorists are asked to avoid the immediate vicinity and use alternate routes until further notice.

Temporary road closures or traffic delays may occur until the operation concludes. We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as deputies complete their work.

Additional information will be provided when it becomes available.

UPDATED INFORMATION - Turkey Fire

As of 8:45pm, All Genasys Zone evacuation orders have been lifted and the forward progress of the fire has been stopped.

A road closure will remain in effect at Brady Lane and Pattison for residents and emergency personnel only.

Additional deputies are currently assigned to extra patrols within the perimeter to ensure added security.

Please use caution in the area as fire personnel, deputies and PGE employees will be working in and around the roadways.

Fire Advisory - Turkey Fire

FIRE EVACUATION NOTIFICATIONS

An active fire is burning in the area of Camanche Drive and Pattison Road.

Fire crews are battling the blaze with the use of both ground and air resources. At this time and in coordination with the CAL FIRE and Calaveras Consolidate Fire Incident Commanders, the following Genasys Zone is under a mandatory evacuation order: CCU-053.

Zone CCU-052 is under a level 2 evacuation warning.

2026 FIND CA Missing Persons Event – Sacramento

Every missing person has a family, friend, or loved one searching for answers.

On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the California Department of Justice will host the FIND CA Missing Persons Event at California State University, Sacramento, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This free event is designed to assist families with missing loved ones by providing direct access to investigators, victim advocates, forensic specialists, and other support resources. Calaveras County Cold Case Task Force members will also be on hand to assist with this event.

Families will have the opportunity to:

- File a new missing person report or update an existing case
- Meet with investigators and support organizations
- Provide photographs, dental records, fingerprints, or DNA samples that may assist in locating or identifying a missing loved one
- Learn about resources available through the California Department of Justice and its partners

Those attending are encouraged to bring photographs, medical and dental records, identification documents, and copies of any available police reports. The event is particularly valuable for long-term adult missing person cases, although reports involving missing juveniles will also be accepted.

Angels-Murphys Rotary Club Deputy of the Year Award

On June 4, 2026, the Angels-Murphys Rotary Club honored the outstanding achievements of several local first responders. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office recognizes the significance of this annual event, which honors the dedication and service of our deputies and other first responders.

We are proud to announce that Corporal William Cordova has been honored with the distinguished “Deputy of the Year” award. This distinguished award was presented to Corporal Cordova by Sheriff Rachelle Whiting.

Corporal Cordova joined the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office in 2022 after serving in the United States Army as a Military Police Officer from 2012 through 2020. During his military career, he achieved the rank of Sergeant and served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, earning a campaign ribbon and the Army Air Assault Badge.

Cordova began his law enforcement career in the Patrol Division, where he quickly earned the respect of his peers and supervisors. He worked a Lake Assignment and partnered closely with the Marine Safety Division, while also showing a strong interest in additional specialized assignments. He was later selected to serve on Search and Rescue, Hazmat/EOD, and the Rural Crimes Task Force.

Throughout his career with the Sheriff’s Office, Cordova has been recognized for his outstanding performance and decisive actions. He was awarded the Bronze Star and a Unit Citation for his actions during an officer-involved shooting, as well as a Campaign Ribbon for an extensive search and rescue mission along the Arnold Rim Trail. He has also received a Campaign Ribbon, Medal of Merit, and Unit Citation for his contributions to multiple narcotics investigations.

In 2024, Cordova was assigned to the Narcotics Division, where he worked on numerous major investigations and authored approximately 20 search warrants. Due to his exceptional performance, he was later reassigned to the Investigations Division as a Detective, where he has continued to excel and has authored more than 20 additional search warrants in support of complex criminal investigations.

On behalf of Sheriff Whiting, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, and the Angels-Murphys Rotary Club, we are honored to present Corporal Cordova with the Angels-Murphys Rotary Club Deputy of the Year Award in recognition of his outstanding service.

On 5/30/2026, at approximately 1:08 PM, Deputies responded to the 900 block of Foothill Road in the Town of Copperopolis for a report of a drowning in Lake Tulloch involving an adult male. This area consists of residential properties that extend to the shoreline of Lake Tulloch, allowing for recreational water access. It was reported that the adult male was last seen struggling to stay above water near an offshore island while attempting to swim back to shore.

Upon arrival, Deputies, with the assistance of the victim’s friends, initiated an immediate search of the area where the victim was last seen. Additional public safety resources responded to assist, including the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Marine Safety Division Dive Team, Copperopolis Fire Protection District, CAL FIRE, and American Legion Ambulance Service. Initial rescue efforts were unsuccessful, and the victim was not immediately located.

The victim was later identified as a 31-year-old male from Campbell, CA. The victim reportedly swam from the main shoreline to an island approximately 90 feet offshore. While attempting to swim back, he became fatigued, struggled in the water, and did not resurface. He was not wearing a personal flotation device.

At approximately 3:10 PM, search operations continued with Deputies and the Marine Safety Division Dive Team conducting water operations. At approximately 4:00 PM, the victim was located and recovered by the Sheriff’s Office underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) at a depth of approximately 28 feet. Divers subsequently recovered him and transported him ashore, where he was released to the Calaveras County Coroner’s Office.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Copperopolis Fire Protection District, CAL FIRE, the Calaveras County Coroner’s Office, American Legion Ambulance Service, and the Sheriff’s Office Marine Safety Division for their coordinated efforts during the rescue and recovery operations associated with this incident. The Sheriff’s Office and its members extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.
