πŸ”₯ HUMAN-CAUSED WILDFIRES

A $6 range fee vs. a $95,000 wildfire bill.

Target shooting on Wildlife Management Areas can create an extreme fire risk. It doesn't even take a spark β€” just intense friction and bullet heat to ignite dry vegetation. In a year already dominated by human-caused fires across the state, a quick session can wipe out vital winter habitat for big game and leave taxpayers footing a massive bill (like the estimated $95,000 spent suppressing the recent 400-acre Middle Fork Fire, pictured here).

Please use established, safer shooting ranges to keep our community and wildlife safe: https://wildlife.utah.gov/shootingranges

Today, the State Forester issued an order that bans the discharge of fireworks in the state through July 5. Under this ban, municipalities may choose to work with the State Forester to designate an area where citizens can discharge fireworks. This decision to allow or not allow fireworks will be up to each individual municipality. We encourage everyone to have a safe and fun July 4th and to celebrate with your families spark-free.

Alongside Governor Cox, Commissioner Ferry, Great Salt Lake Commissioner Steed, and many valued partners, we had the privilege of celebrating recent Great Salt Lake achievements at today’s roundtable discussion.

One major success story is the partnership between our Sovereign Lands and fire programs, using prescribed burns to remove invasive phragmites along the Great Salt Lake shoreline.

To date, the division has successfully treated 8,441 acres of this aggressive, water-intensive reed that threatens wetlands and critical shorebird habitat.

These efforts are already delivering meaningful results, including:
β€’ An estimated 12,586 acre-feet of water savings once fully eradicated and restored to native vegetation
β€’ Approximately $2.2 million in savings compared to mechanical treatment methods

This work highlights the power of collaboration and innovation in protecting the future of the Great Salt Lake.
