Swoop Camp

Swoop Camp Swoop Camp is the extended orientation program of the University of Utah. Come meet other first-year students, have fun, and learn about life at the U!

Swoop Camp is an extended orientation program designed to help further ease the transition of new students to the University of Utah. These programs are offered as an optional supplement to the mandatory summer orientation program. The primary goals of Swoop Camp are to get students excited about the U, help them form connections with their peers, provide intentional leadership development, share

Utah history and traditions, and provide resources for student involvement and success. For 2016, three types of Swoop Camps will be offered: Adventure, Spirit, and Backcountry. Adventure is an experiential camp designed to connect first-year students with each other and the various outdoor opportunities in Salt Lake City and the surrounding area. Students will participate in different outdoor adventures while also discussing their transition to the university. The three sessions of Adventure are June 28-July 2, July 12-16, and August 14-18. In each session, students will rotate between various daytime activities and stay at the same camp site overnight. Spirit is a traditions camp designed to build affinity and prepare first-year students for their transition to the university. Participants learn about campus history, traditions, resources, and student leadership opportunities. Spirit will be held from August 15-18. Backcountry is a backpacking and hiking excursion located in the Uinta Mountains, a short drive from Salt Lake City. Campers will spend time in some of Utah’s most remote and beautiful wilderness areas, while forming strong bonds with other new students and learning from experienced leaders. There is one Backcountry session, which runs from July 19-23.
