The INN Between

The INN Between The INN Between is Utah's end-of-life and medical housing solution for people experiencing homelessness.

We provide a safe and supportive home for people who have nowhere else to live during a medical crisis. The INN Between is Utah's hospice for the homeless, offering a safe and comfortable place where Utah's terminally ill homeless adults can experience the end of life with dignity, receive professional hospice services and be surrounded by compassionate people who care. Our program opened in 2015

to address the tragic history of about 50 people dying on Salt Lake area streets annually. The INN Between needs your support to ensure that homeless individuals can die with dignity. We honor the life of Marilyn, who passed peacefully at the age of 80. Marilyn called The INN Between home for 23 days.

Originally from the Beaver and Zimmer areas of Utah, Marilyn spoke especially fondly of Beaver and the life she had there. She loved the small-town feeling and the close relationships that came with living in a community where everyone knew one another. Those connections were something she remembered warmly and missed deeply.

During her time at The INN Between, Marilyn enjoyed visits and check-ins from our volunteers and staff. We are grateful we had the opportunity to spend time with her, listen to her memories, and provide a place where she was surrounded by care, companionship, and dignity at the end of her life.

A Peaceful Passing: Honoring Our 200th Individual

On the morning of The INN Between’s 11th anniversary, a woman we will call “Evelyn” passed away peacefully. Marking the 200th end-of-life journey supported by The INN Between.

Nearly 90 years old, Evelyn came to us needing a safe bed and compassionate caregivers so she could receive professional hospice care. Her family loved her deeply but initially did not believe they could provide the care she needed at home.

After Evelyn arrived and settled in, something changed. With hospice support in place, her family realized they could bring her home. She spent her final three days in a familiar place, resting comfortably in bed and surrounded by the people who loved her.

Evelyn’s story represents a unique kind of peaceful passing for The INN Between. Her stay with us was brief, but it became the catalyst that helped her return home for her final days. Our mission is not defined by where someone takes their last breath. It is fulfilled when a person has a safe place, compassionate care, dignity, and the assurance that they will not die alone.

As we celebrated 11 years of providing a home at the end of life, we also paused to honor the 200th person whose journey we were privileged to support.

Some people need The INN Between to be their final home. Others need us to help make another path home possible.

Either way, we are here.

We honor the life of Scott, who passed away at age 54 after calling The INN Between home for 70 days.

Born and raised in Utah, Scott shared many happy memories with his brother, Jeff, especially time spent around Utah Lake and enjoying outdoor adventures with their dad. Scott had a passion for cars and spent many years working as an automotive mechanic, making a living doing something he loved.

Scott experienced the loss of both his parents, but was able to spend his last days with his brother by his side. Scott passed with our staff at his bedside to offer him compassion and dignity at the end of life.

We honor the life of Robert, who passed away at the age of 70 after calling The INN Between home for just under a week.

Though our time with Robert was brief and we did not have the opportunity to learn much about his life, he was surrounded by care and compassion in his final moments.

Robert passed peacefully with two NODA volunteers by his side, one of whom sang sweetly to him as he took his final breath. We are deeply grateful for our volunteers who give the gift of presence and ensure that no one has to face the end of life alone.

We would like to formally recognize Rick Robins as our volunteer of the month for August! Rick came to The INN Between after retirement, hoping to put his kitchen skills to work for a good cause. Since then, he's given over 145 hours as a Kitchen Support volunteer, always ready to jump in for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or Fun Lunches, often on short notice. He's even earned the unofficial title of "coffee pods guy," making sure our supply never runs low!

Rick shares: "I have learned new kitchen skills from Deb, Davin, Cindy and Trina, each whom I also count as friends."

Outside the kitchen, Rick enjoys hiking the Wasatch, backyard astronomy, and spending time with his big family which includes 16 grandchildren!

We're so grateful for Rick's dedication and heart. Thank you, Rick — we're lucky to have you!

Though we knew very little about Marvin's life, we are grateful to have provided him with compassionate care during his final days. At The INN Between, every person is deserving of dignity, respect, and the comfort of knowing they are not alone.

Marvin passed peacefully with the support of our dedicated staff, who ensured he was surrounded by kindness and compassion until the very end. We are grateful for the caring community that makes moments like these possible, allowing our most vulnerable neighbors to experience peace at the end of life.

We honor the life of Stephan, who was with us at The INN Between for just two days.

Though our time with Stephan was brief, we came to know his dry sense of humor. Stephan passed peacefully with his best friend of 38 years by his side, a beautiful reminder of the enduring power of friendship and the comfort of having someone who knows and loves you until the very end.

We are grateful to have provided Stephan with compassionate care, dignity, and respect in his final days. Though his time with us was short, he was not alone.
