We have adopted an amendment to City code related to water conservation, along with a temporary land use regulation, to help safeguard the local water supply after a historically warm winter and reduced snowpack intensified the need to protect the city’s long-term future. The amendment limits new high water-use developments, builds consistency with existing land use regulations and will remain in place for up to six months while the City considers long-term zoning changes.

Last week, the City also took steps to declare a stage 2 drought advisory, calling for a reduction of 10 million gallons of water per day.

These actions continue Salt Lake City’s legacy of responsible water stewardship and commitment to protecting natural resources and quality of life for our residents. We encourage residents to stay informed, conserve water where possible and participate in upcoming discussions about the City’s future.

The City Library system will be closed Saturday, March 21 & Sunday, March 22, due to a major electrical system upgrade.

This includes the Main Library and our 8 neighborhood branches. We expect to resume regular Library services on Monday, March 23.

We are aware of recent reports regarding Cesar Chavez, a civil rights advocate, and recognize the gravity of the concerns being raised. Any type of violence contradicts the values of our city, and we stand with survivors of sexual assault while respecting their voices. We will continue to monitor developments and consider next steps as more information becomes available.

We are aware that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has purchased a property in Salt Lake City. We are working to understand the agency’s plans for the site and the impacts on the surrounding community. Transparency about the purpose and potential impacts of this facility is essential.

Our neighbors—no matter where they were born—deserve safety, dignity and the opportunity to thrive. News like this undermines those goals for our community. Salt Lake City stands for inclusion and belonging. We are pressing for answers, considering our options and closely watching how this affects nearby neighborhoods.

We are deeply disturbed by the attack on Utah Islamic Center Imam Shuaib Din near his home during the holy month of Ramadan. We condemn Islamophobia and acts of violence directed at members of our faith communities.

No one should fear for their safety because of their religion. As a city, we remain committed to preserving safety, dignity and religious freedom for our Muslim residents and all members of our community.
