During dry weather, pollutants like bacteria, oil, litter, and pet waste build up on streets and sidewalks. Even when it hasn’t rained in a while, stormwater pollution is still a problem. When rain finally does arrive, all those concentrated pollutants wash into the Jordan River.

The best time to prevent pollution is BEFORE the storm (maybe this Saturday!)

Water is especially on our minds this spring, as we’re reminded how finite and precious this resource is. It takes just a few minutes to learn more about stormwater and how to keep it clean. KUTV Fresh Living and the SLCo Stormwater Coalition’s Josh Mikel team up to show you how.

EVeRyThiNg that goes down the storm drains eventually meets up with the aquatic ecosystem-- no filters, no treatment! That's why pavement, concrete, rooftops add to stormwater runoff.

Hilary Venable, West Valley City, discusses wastewater, stormwater, impervious vs. pervious surfaces, and demonstrates the underground pipe system to help us understand how things we do in our daily lives may cause stormwater pollution and what we can do to prevent water pollution.

Oh man, we were soooo ready for this rain! It's a great time to locate the storm drain in your neighborhood and make sure it doesn't have any leaves or trash blocking the drain. Yard debris and trash are pollutants. When they decompose, they release excess nutrients and chemicals directly into our streams, rivers, and Utah Lake and the Great Salt Lake. That's bad news for the fish and other aquatic life, including the plants and the water itself. Help keep our stormwater clean by keeping the storm drains clear.
