You’ve probably heard a lot about Automated License Plate Reader (ALPRs), but have you ever wondered what an officer sees when we use one?

We wanted to show you a real ALPR report so you can see exactly what this tool provides. We’ve redacted the license plate, address of camera, and the requesting officer’s name, but everything else is untouched.

Here’s what an ALPR report includes:
• A photo of the vehicle’s license plate as it passed the camera
• A short description of the vehicle
• The exact time and location of that scan

And here’s what it does NOT include:
• No video
• No personal information
• No driver details
• No extra data about the vehicle

ALPRs can only be accessed with a case number associated with a criminal investigation as per state law. They simply give us a snapshot in time—nothing more. They’re not live trackers or surveillance feeds. They’re one of many tools we use to help locate stolen vehicles, support investigations, and keep our community safe.

We understand the concerns being raised by our community, and support guardrails to protect privacy. Anyone who violates those guardrails should be held accountable as spelled out in state law.

A Leash That Leads to Safer Spaces

Off‑leash dog incidents are on the rise, and our officers are stepping in with a proactive solution: slip leashes. In partnership with Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering, we’re equipping officers with quick‑grab leads they can offer to owners on the spot. It’s a small gesture that helps prevent scares, keeps pets safe, and supports calmer, safer public spaces for everyone.

Officers from multiple Salt Lake City Police units conducted a focused traffic enforcement operation in areas with high numbers of crashes and moving violations.

The operation focused on some of the most dangerous driving behaviors we see on our roads, including speeding, running red lights, and failing to stop at stop signs.

The results:

• 53 Speeding Violations
• 22 Expired Registration Violations
• 13 No Driver License Violations
• 12 Jaywalking Violations
• 11 Stop Sign Violations
• 10 Equipment Violations
• 5 Failure to Signal Violations
• 5 Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian Violations
• 5 Red Light Violations
• 5 No Insurance Violations
• 2 Improper Turn Violations
• 1 School Zone Speeding Violation
• 1 Reckless Driving Violation
• 1 Blocking the Sidewalk Violation
• 1 Bicycle Lane Violation
• 1 Unsecured Load Violation
• 1 Improper Passing Violation

Officers also conducted an auto-pedestrian crash investigation and a DUI investigation.

Traffic enforcement is about more than writing tickets. It’s about addressing dangerous driving behaviors, preventing crashes, and making our streets safer for everyone.

Every traffic stop is an opportunity to change behavior and potentially prevent a serious or fatal crash.

Slow down. Stop at red lights and stop signs. Drive responsibly.

We have issued a Silver Alert for 79-year-old Lavonna Partridge.

She was last seen near 450 N. Chicago St. at approximately 3:00 p.m. on 8-26-26.

Lavonna has dementia.
