On September 4, 1965, Craig Breedlove brought his four-wheeled, jet-powered car, Spirit of America – Sonic 1, to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah. Pushing the vehicle to its limits across the salt crust, he became the first driver to officially average over 500 mph on land, topping out at 526.26 mph.

Breedlove’s run cemented the Bonneville Salt Flats as a primary location for land-speed record attempts and triggered an intense decade of speed rivalries throughout the late 1960s.

You can see another piece of land racing history at the Museum of Utah, the Mormon Meteor III, in the Inspiring Utah gallery.
