Last week the Youth and Family Division was honored twice at the Human Rights Commission's 77th Annual Human Rights Day Celebration.
Emerging Leader for Human Rights: YouthCity Government's Turaya Bruinsma!
Tiraya Bruinsma is already stepping into meaningful leadership roles with remarkable clarity and purpose. She is pursuing an honors bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Utah with a minor in campaign management. Tiraya currently serves as a Youth City Government Intern with Salt Lake City Corporation, engaging directly with the civic processes that guide our city. She also interns at the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, supporting high level events, community programs, and policy driven initiatives that help shape important conversations across the state. It is my honor to recognize Tiraya Bruinsma.
City Excellence for Human Rights Award: Fairpark Family Learning Center!
During fiscal year 2024–2025, the Fairpark Family Learning Center served a total of 486 participants who visited the computer lab for a wide range of technology and computer related needs. In addition to open lab services, the center offered several educational programs, including Digital Literacy, Money Smart for Adults and Young Adults, and Love and Logic parenting classes. Across these programs, 158 participants enrolled, with over 75% demonstrating measurable improvement in their skills and knowledge at the end of the year.
We are grateful to our wonderful Youth and Family Division staff for showing up for their communities!
Thank you to the Human Rights Commission for this incredible honor.
