Highland High School is a very unique urban high school that blends the feeling of a strong community base with a diverse student body. Highland High School is located in the Sugarhouse Area, a suburb of Salt Lake City, which lies along the Wasatch Mountains in Northern Utah. ate’s capitol city with a population of approximately 180,000 residents. Highland High School is close to the University of Utah and includes many of the university’s faculty and staff among it’s supportive patrons. The communities ethnicity is predominantly middle-class Causcian (about 79%), but the Hispanic population is growing (about 19%). Pacific Islanders, Asians, and a small number of Afro-Americans make up the remaining minority population. Highland’s student body of 1550 students reflect about the same ethnic make-up of the community. Highland is on a modified block schedule. Highland values a comprehensive education and offers a wide range of academic, vocational, technical, family science, and fine arts courses. Highland is home to the Salt Lake District Arts Academy and has a very strong visual arts department. Our AP pass rate for the visual art students is double the national average. In addition, college courses are available to students who exhaust Advance Placement offerings. These students may participate in courses offered in Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah. Other courses are offered throughout the district in the CTC Center, Highland, East and West High Schools. Concurrent College Courses taught are: Writing,
Medical Terminology, Intermediate/College Algebra, Criminal Justice, Biotechnology, and Video Production. The Highland faculty has become very committed to the work of Professional Learning Communities in the last several years. The work ensures teachers have the time to collaborate and focus on student learning.
