New bussing information.
Dear families,
I want to pass along an update about busing and the troubles we’ve had this week while launching our new transportation system and mobile app, Zum. We're working hard to resolve these initial issues and appreciate your patience while we do so.
Eligibility:
State guidelines state that access to bussing is based on distance from home to school: 1.5 miles for elementary and 2 miles for middle and high school students. We’re following these rules closely, but we may be able to accommodate other requests on a case-by-case basis, if space allows.
Access: Currently, only students who meet state transportation guidelines can use the Zum app. If your child does NOT meet state guidelines but is bussed for safety reasons, you will not be able to access information via Zum right now. (This is one of the issues we’re working to troubleshoot with the vendor.) Please check the district website for the latest bus route information.
Route Changes: Our new transportation software has new features to help us optimize bus routes. Coupled with changes due to school closures and relocation of district programs, this means changes to both routes and bus stops.
Safe Routes: Besides distance, we're also considering safe routes, difficult terrain, and busy roads when planning routes and are working to ensure all students are safely transported.
Communication: Not everyone has access to the Zum app yet, so we've had delays updating online maps with route changes. We’ll send daily updates to you via ParentSquare (email) to keep you informed.
Pickup Issues: If your child isn’t picked up as scheduled, please contact our transportation department at (801) 974-8345. We're addressing these issues quickly.
Support Our Drivers: Our drivers are the best in the business and are doing their very best despite system challenges, along with other factors like construction, heavy traffic, and a shortage of bus drivers. Please help by being patient and understanding with those who transport your students.
We’re committed to improving our system and appreciate your feedback and support. Thank you for your understanding as we work through these changes.
Sincerely,
Salt Lake City School District
