This is the page for the Democratic Socialists of Salt Lake, an official chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States, and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International. DSA's members are building progressive movements for social change while establishing an openly democratic socialist presence in American communities and politics. At the root of our socialism is a profound commitment to democracy, as means and end. As we are unlikely to see an immediate end to capitalism tomorrow, DSA fights for reforms today that will weaken the power of corporations and increase the power of working people. For example, we support reforms that:

- decrease the influence of money in politics

- empower ordinary people in workplaces and
the economy

- restructure gender and cultural relationships to
be more equitable

We are activists committed to democracy as not simply one of our political values but our means of restructuring society. Our vision is of a society in which people have a real voice in the choices and relationships that affect the entirety of our lives. We call this vision democratic socialism — a vision of a more free, democratic and humane society.

Riverton’s 287(g) agreement was enacted in violation of their own code and without public vote or comment. Riverton City Council continues to leave the agreement unaddressed, likely to avoid having to have to put their names on something so unpopular.

Urge Riverton City Council to bring the agreement to a public vote, and to vote it DOWN! Their next meeting is on Tuesday, September 15th at 7 PM.

Last December, Salt Lake City stopped installing new ALPR devices following community backlash. The City had planned to accept a grant from the Trump administration to install more of these surveillance devices on Salt Lake City’s west side, but workers and activists went before the council and stopped the grant.

In spite of earlier efforts, the over 80 license plate readers already installed remained up, and now the council is trying again. On Tuesday, September 15, they will attempt to adopt insufficient safeguards in an effort to placate community concerns so that SLCPD can continue the build-out of its surveillance network.

Salt Lakers don’t want this surveillance tech, which is being used by a small handful of billionaires to solidify ever-increasing control over our day-to-day lives. The protections indicated are insufficient, and the data is clear: surveillance tech doesn’t keep people safe. Only community can do that.

Join the hundreds of cities that have stood firmly for civil liberties and prohibit ALPRs in Salt Lake City entirely.

Come join Salt Lake DSA for our monthly General Meeting on Aug 31th from 6PM to 8PM at the Salt Lake City Main Library (Room B). We will be covering all organizing in the past month, upcoming announcements, and vote on resolutions that will impact our chapter. All are welcome, but only members get to vote! Join DSA today to have your voice heard. A crafting and coffee social will be held after the meeting!

Join us for our upcoming Socialist Night School on August 23. Link to event and readings in bio!

This SNS will be brief lecture periods (5-10 minutes each) that end with a discussion question. The groups will discuss each question for 10 minutes. Then a volunteer from each group will share with everyone. The readings will not be required for discussion, but will enhance it significantly.

Recommended pre-readings: Selma James, Race and Class (25-35 minutes), Clara Fraser, Socialist Feminism: Where the Battle of the Sexes Resolves Itself (18-22 minutes), Audre Lorde, The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action (12-15 minutes)

On Saturday, January 3rd the ANSWER Coalition and local Utah organizers got together to hold a No War in Venezuela rally in opposition to the Trump Administration's violent attacks against Venezuela and the abduction of the Venezuelan President.

One of Salt Lake DSA's co-chairs, Adrienne G. spoke calling for the immediate return of President Maduro, First Lady Flores, and an immediate end to the sanctions and "War on Drugs." DSA is also calling on members to contact their representatives to demand they pass the War Powers Resolution. We ask that you join us in this fight against the increasing militarization and violent actions of the Trump administration.

Stand with Venezuela, and stand with the working class!

This session of Salt Lake DSA’s Socialist Night School program explores the history of imperialism, internationalism, the military-industrial complex, and how the tech industry will continue to play a role both within the United States and abroad. Sessions will take place in both Ogden and SLC.

Pre-readings are not required, but will be useful in discussion and provide context for some of the topics presented.
