The first monument constructed on Capitol Hill was completed 99 years ago today. The Mormon Battalion Monument commemorates the sacrifices made by 500 pioneers who joined the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. This 100-foot rose pink granite and bronze monument was sculpted by Gilbert Riswold and dedicated in 1927.

Many who stroll through the Capitol grounds may be unaware that the Olmsted Brothers, renowned for designing New York’s Central Park and the United States Capitol grounds, also crafted the landscape of the Utah State Capitol. In 1911, during discussions with the Utah State Capitol Commission, the Olmsted brothers enlarged the site to preserve the majestic view of the Capitol from the Salt Lake Valley and added an oval walkway, now beloved by thousands of visitors. Be sure to come and explore the Capitol grounds this summer!

Happy 79th birthday to former Governor Gary R. Herbert! He served as Utah’s lieutenant governor beginning in 2005, then in 2009 upon Governor Huntsman’s resignation to serve as a U.S. ambassador, Herbert became Utah’s 17th governor. He was re-elected in 2012 and again in 2016, serving until 2021.

While in office, Governor Herbert bolstered Utah’s economy by streamlining regulations and improving government efficiency, leading the nation in growth and diversification. He addressed key social issues by increasing education funding and launching air quality initiatives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his decisive shift to remote learning and strategic business reopening resulted in low mortality and a rapid economic recovery.
