This week, the Book Arts Program outreach team joined other Marriott Library and University of Utah staff to facilitate a week of workshop and enrichment activities for dozens of high school students from the Ute Indian Tribe and Navajo Nation for the annual Storytelling Camp held here on the University of Utah campus.

Our team led a workshop on western style papermaking where students learned about natural pigments, watermarks, sheet pulling and pulp painting.

Other workshops included podcasting, film and photography, cyanotypes, murals, stop-motion animation and more.

Thank you to the Office of Engagement for making this Storytelling Camp happen year after year!

The Book Arts Program is pleased to be part of the Designing Deseret Symposium organized by the Rare Books here at the on Monday, June 1! Swipe to see a sneak peak of the letterpress broadside participants will print during the symposium.

There are still spots available if you’d like to join us to learn more about Utah’s very own alphabet. Link in bio!

Step into the world of nineteenth-century Utah, where language, typography, identity, and imagination converged in one of the most ambitious printing experiments in American history: the Deseret Alphabet. Designing Deseret is a one-day symposium that seeks to bring together scholars, printers, artists, and enthusiasts to explore the alphabet’s origins, its evolving cultural role, and its enduring legacy in the history of the book.

Following a morning session of guest speakers, attendees will participate in a series of rotating, hands-on activities, hosted by the Special Collections Division of the J. Willard Marriott Library. These 45-minute sessions will provide opportunities to engage directly with historical materials and practices.

Participants will gain practical insight into printing techniques in the Book Arts Studio; examine primary sources in the Rare Books Classroom; and learn how to read and write in Deseret with period primers. Presented in collaboration with the Utah Bibliographical Society, Church History Library, Brigham Young University, Utah State University, and the University of Utah.

Registration for the symposium is $50.00.

Sculptural Paper Casting
Nicole Donnelly (.donnelly.art)
Friday & Saturday, July 17 & 18
10am–5pm
University of Utah campus (precise location to come)
$225

In this two-day workshop, participants learn about three-dimensional paper casting. Beginning with a found or constructed object, participants make simple molds, or an impression in silicone, which resists exposure to water and can be used multiple times to create dimensional paper artwork. After production of the mold, participants use paper pulp and sheets of handmade paper to create casts, or replicas of the original object. The paper cast captures and reproduces fine surface details of the original object, resulting in lightweight and precisely editioned paper sculptures.

Look ahead, the 2026–2027 workshop lineup is coming soon! To receive a mailed calendar of upcoming events, sign up for our newsletter (link in bio) or update your information if you already subscribe to include your mailing address—we’d love to keep you in the loop.
