Some of the most important words in a person’s life aren’t always the words they want to hear.

“I was yelled at. I was told harsh truths. That is exactly what I needed.”

Those words come from a recent The Salt Lake Tribune Voices column about The Other Side Academy—and they capture something at the heart of transformational change.

People don’t change because we lower the bar for them. They change when someone believes they are capable of reaching a higher one.

That requires compassion.
It requires accountability.
It requires belonging.
And sometimes, it requires someone who cares enough to tell you the truth.

At The Other Side Academy, people aren’t defined by their worst decisions or their past. They are challenged to take responsibility for their lives, repair relationships, develop purpose, work, contribute, and become the person they are capable of becoming.

That philosophy has deeply influenced what we are building at The Other Side Village.

Because housing is essential—but housing alone cannot solve homelessness. Community can.

We believe in a Human First, Whole Person Change approach: dignity without indifference, compassion without enabling, and accountability without shame.

This story is a powerful reminder of why that matters.

The story behind The Other Side Donuts is about so much more than donuts.

We’re using social enterprises to create opportunity. People are learning new skills, earning a paycheck, building confidence, and discovering that their past does not have to define their future.

When someone walks into The Other Side Donuts, they’re not just buying a donut. They’re helping create an opportunity for someone to build a different life at The Other Side Village .

Help us build 396 homes, pavilions, an amphitheater, retail and social enterprise spaces, additional cottages for The Other Side Inn, and the infrastructure that will make the next phase possible.

Bridge the gap as we continue building toward a community that can sustain itself through housing, earned income, and social enterprise.

Order donuts from The Other Side Donuts or freeze-dried fruit from The Other Side Foods. Stay at The Other Side Inn. Rent the Ally Community Center for your next event or gathering. Hire our Leadership Institute for training your organization. Or help one of our businesses grow through your network.

Bring your company to the Village. Advocate for Phase 2. Help us build public understanding. And help open doors that we can’t open alone.

On September 17, we’ll celebrate the ribbon cutting and open house for The Other Side Prep School and the Pat and Florence King Family Self-Reliance House.

The Prep School serves an important purpose: helping individuals prepare for Village life.

It’s a place to build the skills, relationships, accountability, confidence, and sense of purpose needed to become a successful member of the Village community.

Because moving into a home is just the beginning.

Building a life is the real goal.

That’s what we’re building at The Other Side Village.

Not just housing alone.

Community. Purpose. Opportunity.
Connection. Hope.

We were honored to partner with HomeAid Utah to host their annual Diaper Drive Extravaganza on Friday at The Other Side Village.

It was the perfect day for an event like this and a whole lot of diapers coming together to support Utah families who need them most.

And then, just to keep things interesting, a torrential downpour hit about five minutes after we wrapped up. Perfect timing.

Big thanks to HomeAid Utah, their volunteers, partners, and everyone who showed up to make a difference.

We love seeing The Other Side Village become a place where people come together and strengthen the community.

It was a great example of what happens when we do it together.
