Today we launched the ParentsEmpowered.org chalk murals featured at 8 elementary schools across the Wasatch front, from Lehi to Clearfield. The murals are a reminder to parents and caregivers to talk to their kids about the harms of underage drinking. Research tells us that kids are listening more than we might think. By sharing your strong disapproval for drinking underage, you help kids to continue healthy brain development and have more opportunity to reach their full potential.

This year, a change to Utah law now allows businesses located near parks, playgrounds, and libraries to apply for an alcohol license with the DABS.

To do so, the business first needs permission from its local authority, such as the city where it is located.

When a gunman fired his weapon inside a state liquor store earlier this year, an off-duty highway patrol trooper responded, stopping the shooter. Jeremy Matthews, now a sergeant with the Dept. of Corrections, happened to be entering the store when he heard the gunshots. Without hesitation, Matthews fired back at the shooter and held him in place until police arrived. Sgt. Matthews’ bravery and quick actions probably saved lives.

We are so grateful to Sgt. Matthews and to the store staff who took care of one another during the horrific event. Alcoholic Beverage Services commissioners were honored to meet and personally thank Sgt. Matthews.
