Salt Lake County is better because Joseph Genda is part of it.

From arriving in the United States as a refugee to now leading the Salt Lake County Office for New Americans, Joseph brings both lived experience and steady leadership to his work—helping ensure immigrants and refugees in our community feel welcomed, connected, and able to fully participate in civic life.

I’m proud to see him recognized by the League of Women Voters with the Making Democracy Work Award. His work reflects a simple truth: our democracy is stronger when more people are included and engaged.

Congratulations, Joseph—and thank you for everything you do for Salt Lake County.

Our community is stronger because of stories like this. 💛

For twenty years, our neighbor Mustafa worked tirelessly to build a life through education in Afghanistan, creating a career, stability, and cherished memories.

On August 15, 2021, everything changed. In a matter of hours, that life was gone. Forced into hiding and eventually evacuated by the U.S. military, he left behind home, loved ones, and everything familiar — carrying only hope for survival.

Today, he is rebuilding here in the United States. Starting over is not easy. But resilience, courage, and hope continue to shine through.

As a community, we honor these journeys. We stand with our new neighbors. And we commit to building a place where everyone has the opportunity to begin again.

A story of courage. A story of resilience. A story of hope. 💙

Today, we highlight M. Hilal, a 17-year-old student at Utah International Charter School from Afghanistan who shared her powerful journey of arriving in the United States as a refugee in 2021 and building a new life through strength, determination, and community.

She spoke about overcoming fear, learning a new language, and perseverance, while reminding us of what truly matters: kindness, respect, and belonging.

Her message to our community:
“You are welcome here. You are seen. You matter.”
