About The National Park Service
Most people know that the National Park Service cares for national parks, a network of 400+ natural, cultural and recreational sites across the nation. The treasures in this system – the first of its kind in the world –have been set aside by the American people to preserve, protect, and share, the legacies of this land. People from all around the world visit national parks to experience America's story, marvel at the natural wonders, and have fun. Places like the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty, and Gettysburg are popular destinations, but so too are the hundreds of lesser known yet equally meaningful gems like Rosie the Riveter in California, Boston Harbor Islands in Massachusetts, and Russell Cave in Alabama. The American system of national parks was the first of its kind in the world, and provides a living model for other nations wishing to establish and manage their own protected areas. The park service actively consults with these Nations, sharing what we've learned, and gaining knowledge from the experience of others. Beyond national parks, the National Park Service helps communities across America preserve and enhance important local heritage and close-to-home recreational opportunities. Grants and assistance are offered to register, record and save historic places; create community parks and local recreation facilities; conserve rivers and streams, and develop trails and greenways. We hope to see you soon in a national park and invite you to explore the ways we can help you preserve what’s important in your hometown.

Today's National Park Week's Theme is, "Watch Wildlife Wednesday"!

The desert is full of giants, including GIANT Desert Centipedes. Ok fine, we're just having a little bit of fun!

Giant Desert Centipedes (Scolopendra heros) are a common insect found in the Guadalupe Mountains and surrounding states.

Adaptations include size (largest centipede in North America) and the fact it is aposematically colored which assists with letting predators know it too is a threat.

If that weren't enough, these centipedes feature an incredibly painful bite and subsequent venom. The venom can be exceedingly painful for vertebrate species and will be noted by sharp pains and swelling in the area.

These creatures are generally nocturnal hunters and primarily feast upon smaller species including rodents and reptiles.

With plenty to feed upon at the park, we suggest keeping your distance and watching these creatures if you happen to run into one!

We're celebrating National Park Week! Today's theme is, "America in Motion" so let's talk about the arduous journey to and "over" the Guadalupe Mountains!

When you think of Guadalupe Mountains National Park we're sure your first thought is mail and airplanes! Wait, what?

Progress is a prevalent theme throughout the park. A great example of progress is highlighted by the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. The Butterfield was a stagecoach route which moved mail and people from St. Louis, MO and Memphis, TN to San Francisco, CA in 25 days or less.

This arduous passage required stops along the way with the Pinery, at the entrance to Pine Springs Canyon, being one of those. Established in 1858 this would serve as a blacksmith shop, horse changing station, and an all too quick rest stop.

100 years later to commemorate one of the first successful ventures to move people and mail across the country, American Airlines erected a metal monument at the top of Guadalupe Peak commemorating such an achievement and celebrating the progress of movement that had been made up to that point.

Hiking to the top of Guadalupe Peak is a 3,000 foot climb and 8.5 miles round trip. For those who want to read the inscription at the top of Texas without hiking all the way up there, check out the .75 mile round trip walk to the Pinery!
