We're keeping it local today with a hero in Salisbury - Dorris "Dee Dee" Wright!

As a teenager, she joined the Civil Rights Movement and quickly gained leadership positions and traction, leading some of the first sit-ins at lunch counters in Greenville, SC. Her work led her from there to organizing the Black Women’s International Conference in 1975, and to the White House under the Clinton administration. Her work has earned accolades and awards on the national level, and her work continues today as a member of the Rowan County Board of Elections.

Cover-ups seem to be par for the course these days. First it was the classified documents, January 6th, and 'the little black book doesn't exist'. Then came the redacted files - and now it's a giant tarp that's STILL in front of the Kennedy Center.

Democracy depends on transparency; cover-ups only deepen the damage and invite ridicule. And this time, just like everything else Trump touches... Well, it's yet another cover-up.

Common Cause NC Director Sailor Jones' commentary reflects the organization's nonpartisan focus on government accountability and voting rights as well as what locals observed at the Rowan County Elections Board.

"...Ignoring the public’s suggestions, Republicans opted instead for a plan with only 13-days of the 17 allowed — making the mandatory last Saturday (Oct. 31) the only weekend option for voters this fall. Democrats asked for at least the same number of days available during the last midterm election in 2022 — 15, including two Saturdays and one Sunday. According to voters in attendance, this request ultimately fell on deaf ears."

“Chillingly dysfunctional.” “A demonstration of how democracy dies.” “Rowan County deserves better.” These are just a few of the ways Rowan residents described the county’s June 10 board of elections […]

Representative Barbara Jordan didn't break barriers - she shattered them. Jordan was the first Black woman in America to preside over a legislative body, but she didn't stop there. From the Texas state legislature, she went on to become a three-term US Representative and, in 1976, became the first female and first Black keynote speaker at the DNC.
