Which Side are You On? - rendition by Owen Kampenhout

The song was originally written by Florence Reece, wife of a union activist during the Harlan County War. The Harlan County War pitted the United Mine Workers of America against mine operators within Harlan County. It began after the mine operators cut wages of miners. The ‘war’ lasted most of the 1930s.

They "knew the power of a union—and knew what it felt like to fight tooth and nail for a union card. In their day, organizing a union meant midnight meetings, days spent down the pit and nights spent dodging armed mine guards." - Kim Kelly, Smithsonian Folkways, 2023.

NC Newsline: Rob Schofield: Who’s kidding who? Conservative election law hypocrisy sinks to new depths

A must read to understand what is happening in NC. “Anyone who falls for the claim that the actions of state Republican leaders in regulating elections and complying with election law are motivated by anything other than the raw lust for power is either absurdly naïve or willfully ignorant.” ⬇⬇⬇

Father Ronald Hayes says he agreed to talk to the video crew about his son’s murder because he thought he would be featured in an ad against gun violence. But the ad is actually aimed at smearing the political record of former Gov. Roy Cooper, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate.-

Hayes - “The commercial looks as if I’m trying to sway North Carolinians from voting the way that they want to vote, and that wasn’t my agenda,” Hayes said. “I wanted to let the community know about gun violence and about my son being murdered.”

“Once I saw the commercial, I called [the ad makers] back and I asked them again, and they stated again that they are independent,” Hayes said. “I told them that I felt that this was deceiving, it was conniving and it was sneaky how they used me and my family to get out their word.”

Ronald Hayes was cautious when he talked to a reporter this week about the political TV advertisement he appears in, talking about the death of his son Shemar, a college football player who was murdered in Charlotte in March 2024 at age 23.

GOP Senate candidate, campaigning as truck-driving everyman, travels by private jet linked to convicted felon - from Judd Legum, founder and author of Popular Information, an independent newsletter dedicated to accountability journalism, where this article first appeared.

Know your candidates before you vote. There's a reason Roy Cooper is the best choice for NC Senator.

"A more accurate account of Whatley’s travel habits, however, is found amid thousands of pages of campaign finance filings. Those documents reveal that Whatley’s campaign committees have spent over $100,000 since last September on travel in a $2 million private jet. Although efforts were made to obscure the owner of the aircraft, there is a paper trail linking it to Carl Andrew “Drew” Boggs — a felon convicted of defrauding the federal government."
