Happy Labor Day Weekend! For many, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and Labor Day is the unofficial end. But do you know why we really celebrate Labor Day? The holiday's origins trace back to the nineteenth-century Labor Movement, which fought to protect workers from working long hours in unsafe conditions for little pay.

On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from City Hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history. The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in other industrial centers across the country, and many states passed legislation recognizing it. But it wasn't a federal holiday until 12 years later. On May 11, 1894, workers for the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago declared a strike. On June 26, 1894, the American Railroad Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, called for a boycott of Pullman railway cars, crippling railroads nationwide. Troops were dispatched to Chicago to break the strike, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers and the arrest of Debs. After this event, and hoping to repair ties with essential American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.
