A Materials Recovery Facility maintenance worker navigates a scissor lift through a canyon of mixed recyclables at ReGen Monterey. Hard to believe all of this commingled material — 250 tons a day! — will travel through a mile of conveyors and emerge as clean, sorted bales of single materials. None of it happens without the talented maintenance teams who keep this complex system running around the clock.

Like a brushstroke across a canvas, a Scraper carves its signature into the earth at ReGen Monterey’s landfill. Its blade cuts into the hillside, filling its bowl with sand that will be hauled and spread as daily cover by sundown, keeping trash grounded and out of the air. On , we celebrate the operators and mechanics of ReGen Monterey whose skill keep these versatile machines, and this essential work, moving.

Here’s your reminder that food scraps 🍌🍪🍉🥬🦴 plus yard trimmings 🌿🌾🍂🍁🍃 go in your green curbside organics cart.

We’ll recycle these materials into rich compost for local farms! From kitchen to curb to compost and then spread over the patchwork quilt of fertile farms in Monterey County - check it out!

Just in time for , ReGen Monterey, Keith Day Company (KDC), Engineered Compost Systems, Graniterock and Tetra Tech celebrated the groundbreaking of one of the one of the most significant upgrades in our composting operations’ history.

Our new Covered Aerated Static Pile (CASP) Composting Facility will transform ReGen and KDC’s existing windrow composting process into a more advanced system that accelerates composting, reduces odors and emissions, and modernizes the facility with innovative new technologies.

This $8.7 million project — partially funded by a $3 million CalRecycle grant — represents a major investment in cleaner, more efficient organic waste processing and the future of sustainable materials management in Monterey County.

ReGen Monterey is celebrating its 75th anniversary year as an industry leader that continues to invest innovative technology and practices that divert materials from landfills, protect our local environment, fight climate change and strengthen the circular economy.

Since California’s landmark SB 1383 was signed into law in 2016, ReGen Monterey and KDC have been ready to help meet the moment — welcoming curbside food scraps commingled with yard trimmings and transforming them into nutrient-rich compost, 100% of which supports local farms.

ReGen’s mission is “to do more to waste less,” and this project marks a major milestone in putting that mission into action by modernizing our operations, recovering more from what we throw away, and turning local organic waste into a resource that benefits Monterey County.

Follow along on LinkedIn and Instagram as we document this transformation, and thank you to our project partners, CalRecycle, and ReGen’s Board of Directors and leadership for helping turn this vision into reality.

It may be , but at ReGen Monterey, air quality awareness is part of our work every day.

Agencies like the Monterey Bay Air Resources District and the California Air Resources Board help regulate and partner with waste management agencies like ours to ensure we’re protecting public health and the environment through ongoing air and water quality monitoring, mitigation and compliance.

That’s why we’re grateful our Board of Directors recently approved more than half a million dollars toward a proposed 2026 Landfill Gas Collection and Control System Improvement Project in partnership with engineering inc.

ReGen Monterey operates one of the nation’s earliest landfill gas-to-energy renewable power plants. Across our landfill, more than 100 wells collect landfill gas created as organic materials like food scraps and yard trimmings decompose underground. That gas is captured and funneled to our renewable power facility, where it generates electricity to help power our operations and supply energy back to the local grid through partners like Central Coast Community Energy ⚡

But this system isn’t static. As landfill conditions change over time, wells and infrastructure must be expanded, replaced and upgraded to continue capturing emissions efficiently. This project will help fill collection gaps, replace aging wells and strengthen the network that reduces greenhouse gas emissions while supporting regulatory compliance.

Once operational, new wells may also be evaluated for recently installed automated Loci Controls Inc wellhead technology, providing even more data and control to help optimize gas collection.

From compliance to innovation, these investments help protect air quality, reduce emissions and support a more sustainable future.

I spy a bulldozer in a sea of garbage 👀 can you?

These powerful machines and talented operators move massive mounds of trash, pushing materials toward compactors that help conserve valuable landfill space.

On , we thank the hardworking ReGen staff doing the dirty, difficult and essential work that often blends into the background — even when they’re moving mountains.

For many, what happens after the curbside cart is collected is out of sight and out of mind, but behind every curbside cart is an enormous operation powered by skilled public servants.

✨ We 💜💛🩵 how Last Chance Mercantile staff repurposed these colorful wood sculptures from First Night Monterey into vibrant decor around their donation area, transforming a chain link fence into something creative, welcoming and unmistakably Last Chance. It’s a reflection of the artistic eye and resourceful spirit of a team that sees potential where others might not.

If you have small or large stores collections, specialty items or reusable materials looking for a last chance at a second life, consider donating them to the store. Your donations help divert valuable materials from the landfill while supporting homeless veteran services through the Veterans Transition Center of California
