This past weekend, CHP officers participated in an emergency evacuation drill in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Exercises like these provide valuable opportunities to train alongside our partner agencies and county stakeholders, strengthening coordination and enhancing our collective disaster response capabilities.

Following the drill, we joined fellow public safety agencies for a Community Safety Day, where we had the opportunity to engage with residents, answer questions, and share information about emergency preparedness and public safety.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success. Through training, collaboration, and community engagement, we are better prepared to serve and protect when it matters most.

This afternoon one of our officers received a be on the lookout call for some juveniles riding e-bikes recklessly in a neighborhood. The officer located one of the juveniles who attempted to flee but was unsuccessful, and the bike was impounded.

Thinking about riding an e-bike? Know the classes, know the laws, and ride safely. 🚲⚡

California recognizes 3 classes of e-bikes:

🔹 Class 1 — Pedal-assist only, up to 20 MPH
🔹 Class 2 — Throttle-assisted, up to 20 MPH
🔹 Class 3 — Pedal-assist only, up to 28 MPH

Important California e-bike laws:
✅ Riders under 18 must wear a helmet
✅ Class 3 riders must be at least 16 years old
✅ E-bikes must follow traffic laws just like other vehicles
✅ Stop signs and red lights still apply
✅ Riding distracted or recklessly can result in citations or crashes

Safety reminders:
✔ Wear a properly fitted helmet
✔ Ride with the flow of traffic
✔ Use lights and reflectors at night
✔ Stay alert and avoid distractions
✔ Watch your speed around pedestrians and traffic

E-bikes are a great way to travel, commute, and explore — but safety should always come first. Ride smart, ride responsibly, and help keep California roads safe for everyone.

Yesterday, CHP had the pleasure of meeting students at Jesse G. Sanchez Elementary School during their career fair. Officers had the opportunity to answer students’ questions, share information about careers in law enforcement, and help students understand that officers are a resource and are here to help.

Events like these are an important part of community policing and building positive relationships with the next generation. CHP is proud to connect with students and inspire future leaders through education, safety, and service.

The torch is more than a flame — it is a symbol of hope for Special Olympics athletes. It represents courage, inclusion, diversity, and the fiery passion each athlete carries with them.

This morning, CHP officers joined numerous law enforcement agencies in participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run to honor and support Special Olympics athletes. Together, we proudly carried the Flame of Hope and celebrated the determination, strength, and inspiring spirit of these incredible athletes.

National Police Officers Memorial Week is a time to honor and remember the brave officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. It is also a reminder of the selfless work law enforcement officers do every day to keep our communities safe. While one week may never be enough to fully recognize the sacrifices made by fallen officers and their families, we remain committed to never forgetting their courage, dedication, and service. Their legacy will forever live on in the communities they served and protected.

Corvette driver suffers suspected major injuries after a head on crash with a tour bus. On May 16, 2026, CHP officers responded to a head-on crash on 17 Mile Drive west of Majella Road.

Preliminary investigation indicates a tour bus carrying 48 passengers was traveling westbound on 17 Mile Drive while a Corvette was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Corvette crossed over the double yellow lines and collided head-on with the tour bus.

The driver of the Corvette sustained suspected major injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The driver was also suspected of driving under the influence and was placed under arrest. One passenger on the bus sustained suspected minor injuries, while all other passengers reported no injuries.

The CHP reminds motorists to never drive under the influence and to always drive at a safe speed. Reckless driving decisions can have life-changing consequences for everyone on the roadway.
