We are proud to announce Dr. Deneen Guss, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools, as our 2026 Public Servant of the Year!

Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deneen Guss was first elected Monterey County Superintendent of Schools in January 2019 and began her second term in January 2023. She provides leadership and support to Monterey County’s 24 school districts, eight charter schools, and the more than 72,000 students they serve. A 39-year veteran educator, Dr. Guss holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership. Throughout her career, she has remained dedicated to expanding educational opportunities and ensuring every child has the support needed to succeed.

Oct 9th Reopening of Maya Cinemas - The City of Salinas and Maya Cinemas announced a partnership with the City, Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce, Salinas City Center Improvement Association (SCCIA), and One Main Street to reopen the Maya Cinemas on October, 9th. Prior to the reopening, Maya Cinemas plans to make interior improvements to enhance the customer experience.

While next steps are still being determined, all partners are optimistic that they can work together to develop a long-term plan for the cinema that has been a part of the Salinas community for decades.

Their mission is to champion the arts to enrich our community through education, healing programs, and vital support for local creatives. Arts4MC turned this vision into measurable impact, having last year awarded over $474,000 in grants and scholarships to nurture individual artists and invested $2.2 million to empower local cultural projects.

RtMP is a nonprofit empowering children, caregivers, and communities to lead through literacy. Through no-cost, equitable, student-led, and family-centered programs, they build confidence, strengthen reading skills, and have supported more than 40,000 students across Monterey County. As they reach over 165 classrooms in the county, RtMP wants to welcome you to their new space with a fun ribbon-cutting event filled with sweet treats and raffle prizes!
