The mission of the RCD is to conserve and improve our natural resources, integrating the demand for environmental quality with the needs of agricultural and urban users. The RCD is guided by a Board of Directors who are appointed by the county board of supervisors to serve voluntarily and represent a broad spectrum of experience including farming, ranching, financial and non-profit land conservancy management. depending upon available grant funds, the RCD employs multiple staff members with diverse technical backgrounds to support implementation of the RCD mission. The RCD provides direct assistance to Monterey County farmers and landowners working with us voluntarily to protect their soil, water, and natural habitats. We also partner with agricultural and natural resource protection organizations and agencies throughout the Central Coast.

For this week's , we're highlighting the successful completion of the Carmel Valley Fuelbreak Project! Through the FHWR Program, 419 acres of strategic fuel reduction treatments were completed across Carmel Valley between 2021 and 2026, helping reduce wildfire risk, improve firefighter access, support evacuation planning, and strengthen community resilience.

🌿 Celebrating Sally Norman's First Year of Service! 🌿

Please join us in congratulating Sally Norman on completing her first year as a GrizzlyCorps Fellow with the Resource Conservation District of Monterey County!
Over the past year, Sally has supported community gardens, pollinator habitat projects, volunteer engagement, environmental education, and conservation outreach throughout Monterey County. Her dedication, creativity, and enthusiasm have made a lasting impact on our team and the many community partners she has worked alongside.

As Kasey Butler, Ag Team Operations Manager at RCD Monterey County, shared:
"Sally has been a huge asset to the RCD of Monterey County's Agroecology team. She is incredibly thoughtful, respectful, hardworking, and responsible. I have been consistently impressed with the way Sally carries herself, the way she synthesizes and shares information, and how seamlessly she interacts with new people in a work setting. We are thrilled she'll be joining us for another year!"

We're excited to share that Sally will be returning for a second year of service, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact she will have in our communities.

🌱☀️ Solar power meets smart irrigation! 💧🚜

Guillermo Lazaro is leading ALD & Y Organic Farm toward a more sustainable future.🌎💚

With support from RCDMC and funding through the RCDSCC's SWEEP block grant program, the farm successfully installed a solar-powered pumping system that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy costs for the business. 💰📉☀️⚡💧

Over its useful life, the project is expected to prevent approximately 83 tonnes of CO₂e emissions, the equivalent of taking 20 cars off the road for a year! 🚙➡️

🌧️ El Niño Is Here: Prepare Now for Potential Impacts

🌲 Forestry Fridays is back! Learn simple preventive actions that can help reduce property damage, protect natural resources, and improve community resilience during severe weather events.🌊

⛈️During a strong El Niño, Sea Surface Temp or SST anomaly charts typically show a large area of warmer-than-normal water (reds and oranges) extending across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. 🌲

🌡️Current forecasts indicate that El Niño is expected to become very strong, with approximately a 70% chance that the 2026 event could become the strongest on record since at least 1950. Peak intensity is currently expected between October and December.🌧️

⚠️The time to prepare is now: steps you can take today

🏡 Inspect your property
🔍 Check roofs, retaining walls, drainage systems, and slopes for signs of wear or damage that could worsen during heavy rainfall.
💧 Improve drainage
🧹 Clean gutters, downspouts, and property drains.
🌧️ Remove debris from nearby storm drains where appropriate and safe to do so.
🌬️ Reduce wind and storm hazards
🌲 Remove dead trees, weak limbs, and loose outdoor items that could become dangerous during high winds.
🌱 Stabilize exposed soil by applying mulch, planting native vegetation, or using erosion-control fabrics.

🌿💧 Funding Awarded for Salinas River Restoration! 🦋🐢

The Wildlife Conservation Board has awarded RCDMC with $1.824 million for Salinas River Arundo Eradication: Phase VI!

The project will:
🚫🌿remove invasive Arundo
🪏🌱plant 4,000 native riparian plants
🌊🔥reduce flood and wildfire risks
⬇️💧Improve groundwater recharge
🐾🦉Enhance habitat for wildlife including monarch butterflies, western pond turtles, burrowing owls , and migratory birds

This project, funded by Proposition 4, will create a healthier, more resilient Salinas River for both wildlife and local communities.
