We’re grateful to Ascension Via Christi for recognizing one of our crew members during EMS Week.
Healthcare is always a team effort, and we appreciate the partnership and support we receive from the hospital staff we work alongside every day. Proud of our crews and the care they provide to patients across Kansas.
🚑 In recognition of EMS Week, we’re highlighting the individuals who serve on the front lines of emergency care.
Meet Stan Fields, Paramedic/RRT, with Life Touch EMS, who shares his perspective and experiences in EMS over his nearly 20 years serving our communities.
What is the most rewarding part of what you do?
The most rewarding part of this profession is being there for people on some of the hardest days of their lives, bringing not just clinical care, but calmness, reassurance, and stability. I also value building and leading a team that shares a deep commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care, where every patient is treated with the same dignity you would want for your own family. Supporting multiple communities through interfacility transport adds another layer of purpose, as we help bridge gaps in care and ensure patients continue receiving the treatment they need.
What do you wish more people understood about EMS?
I wish more people understood that EMS is about far more than lights and sirens. Every call requires critical thinking, rapid decision-making, and strong teamwork as we care for patients who are often critically ill, whether in emergencies or interfacility transport. At its core, EMS is about people, and bringing calm, empathy, and reassurance is just as important as the medical care we deliver.
What moments make you feel like you were meant to be here?
The moments that stand out most aren’t always the highest-acuity calls. They’re often when you see a patient calm down simply because you took the time to care, listen, and be present. It’s also seeing my team step in with confidence, skill, and compassion to deliver exceptional care. Those moments reaffirm that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be, serving our communities and making a difference one patient at a time.
