There are days in Reckless that seem unbelievable. Surreal. Today is one of those days.

That is a picture of Mat Hoffman wearing a Reckless shirt.

I’ve been a fan of Mat Hoffman since I could walk. ‘Legend’ is often the word associated with his name, google it. He’s accomplished incredible things in the Action/Extreme Sports world and he shows no signs of letting up any time soon.

But his achievements on a bike aren’t the main reason he is a hero of mine. Mat is a dreamer. His tenacity and imagination have taken him to places no one ever thought possible.
He pioneered a sport that millions watch today, as well as built a worldwide brand.

All from his Home State of Oklahoma.

He is recognizable on every continent and yet he remains the most humble dude I’ve ever met.
A couple years back I got to meet Mat and since then, we have become great friends.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that guy I used to watch flip bikes on TV, the guy all the other extreme athletes look up to, and the guy that Evel Knievel himself called ‘crazy’(truth), would one day be my friend.

Let alone wear a shirt featuring my son and in support of a cause I founded. humbled.
Never stop dreaming kids. — from founder/ceo Jordan Blake Parker.

I got a message yesterday from a very concerned church lady, that one of our Saints (a guy who had successfully graduated our Flight School program) was seen smoking a cigarette outside the local Walmart.

I held back the laughter long enough to reply…

“Yeah, I guess he doesn’t look like what you are used to. But that guy is one of the best guys I know. He worked his butt off for a year to complete our program, now he works overtime every week so he can pay fines and other debts he incurred while being an addict for almost twenty years. He’s been promoted twice at his job in one year—they call him the best worker they have ever seen.”

She interrupted to tell me that she just didn’t think He was representing Reckless or myself very well by smoking a cigarette outside Walmart.

“Mam, that guy is my hero. He looked shame and addiction directly in the face and he owned up to it. He fought his demons. Every one of them and now he’s a role model for all the men in the program hoping they can do the same. He isn’t perfect but he’s TRUE. He’s come from enough darkness to be grateful for the light and everything he has right now. So, thanks for your concern but he’s doing just fine…

Just remember—We are Saints. Not Angels.”

Next time I see him I think I’ll buy him a pack and tell him Keep up the great work. I may even smoke one with him. I’d be proud if someone saw me outside Walmart with this dude.

He’s the kind of person I choose to be associated with.

Our Story

When we started Reckless a few years ago, we had absolutely no idea what we were doing. Zero. I was fresh out of rehab at a long term treatment facility, and when I returned home nothing looked the same. All I could see was a world in pain. The opioid epidemic had torn through the heart of America and ‘overdose’ had become a household word. Everyone I spoke to said the same things. Someone they knew, a friend or family member, was on drugs and had lost control. It was everywhere. People would ask me if I would meet with their family member or friend who was on drugs. They wanted to help the addict but nobody had any idea how to do that. So I just started giving my phone number to anyone who was suffering. A simple gesture. You need help? Call me. Anytime. It blew up.

We had so many people wanting us to talk with their friends and family who were lost in addiction, that it didn’t take long to notice the problem. Resources. If the addict wanted to change, they first had to pay insane entry fees to rehabs that didn’t work. The addict or their family would need to come up with as much as $25,000 in order to receive treatment. In return for the thousands paid, they would go to 30 day programs that had about a 2-3% success rate. Nobody knew what to do. The recovery system was bleeding families dry and still offering no help. Out of this confusion and chaos, Reckless was born.

First we did our homework. Research. We found rehabilitation centers with the highest success rates and least expensive entry fees. Then we spread the information like wild fire. We met with Intake Directors and listened to them. They knew the system was broken. Even if an addict wanted help there were waiting lists, financial problems, and location issues. There was no way to get the addict to the rehab, and no money to pay for their treatment. We paid the entry fee for the first few out of our pocket. 800-900 dollars each time. But we aren’t wealthy. So we started payment plans with these programs. They agreed to let the addict undergo treatment and in return Reckless would pay a hundred or two hundred a week til the entry fee was paid. It was a crazy idea considering we had no money, but we didn’t know what else to do. Everyone thought we were crazy. Then my mom and dad saw what we were doing and jumped in. The amount of people we were able to help doubled almost overnight. It was working. People were getting treatment. Families had hope again. We helped almost a hundred addicts get treatment in our first two years.
