Salida to Leadville STAGE and RAIL TRAIL A GARNA-administered project overseeing gradual implementation of a driving/hiking/biking/horseback t

This page is following the study and eventual designation of a 70-mile long hiking/mountain biking and partial driving trail corridor in central Colorado. When and if designated and completed this route will celebrate the history of the 1865-85 Canon City to Leadville stage road and portions of the Colorado Midland Railroad completed about 1885.

Although we haven't posted for some time, our Stage and Rail Team has been hard at work!

Most important update - our website www.stage-rail.com has received a major revision.

In addition to being able to download project documents like the Feasibility Study and draft Master Plan, and read short histories of the stage road and Midland RR, we've created an INTERACTIVE MAP that will, when connected to the Internet, follow your progress along the 75 mile route so you'll know exactly where you are. (You need to click on the round Find My Location button in the upper left of the map to get a blue dot that follows you.)You can highlight the Driving Route and those sections that are only appropriate for pedestrians and cyclists. And along the route the interactive map identifies some 60 Points of Interest - clicking on an orange icon brings up a thumbnail image and a sentence describing the point, and it also provides a link to our brand new ONLINE BROCHURE. There you can scroll to the Point of Interest where we have full sized captioned photos and an opportunity to learn even more (by clicking on the +).

After some 19 years of research, exploration, project planning and implementation we are finally nearing the point where we can announce the majority of the historic route is officially recognized by the two counties, three towns and public agencies who have jurisdiction over its roads and trails.

We're planning a series of events this summer and fall of 2025 which might be of interest. We've already led a vehicle tour from Salida to Buena VIsta, a bike ride from Salida out to Big Bend, and made an evening presentation at GARNA's great new location at the refurbished Valley View Schoolhouse west of Salida. The next event is a repeat presentation at the Buena Vista Heritage museum in the old court house on East Main Sunday July 20th at 3-4:30pm. Later in the summer we'll lead vehicle tours from BV to Leadville and several bicycle groups.

We always like to hear from folks who can check our facts and enrich our stories or might contribute some time or a few dollars towards the few remaining goals of the project.

Here are images from the recent tours.

It's that time of year again, when a stretch of freezing weather changes the Arkansas River into a real wonderland of icy shapes and flows. Here are some examples from today's bike ride along CR371 north of our home. It happens this is a most beautiful stretch of the Stage and Rail historic route, a long time GARNA project we hope to bring to completion in the next couple of years. The GARNA/AHRA Bike Your Park Day ride on the proposed Stage and Rail Historic Route in southern Lake County Colorado was a great success! One group, led by the SRHR volunteer adviser Alan Robinson, followed the route south from Leadville’s Mineral Belt Trail 14 miles over Lake County, BLM and USFS roads to end at the AHRA Hayden Reservoir site; another, led by Absolute Bikes Adventures owner Shawn Gillis and AHRA ranger Tappan Brown covered the 6-mile High Lonesome loop south of the rec site. Weather was cold but provided spectacular views along the trails with backdrops of Mt Elbert and other 14ers with the season’s first significant snowfall.

This month's July 14th meeting of the Lake County Open Space Initiative LCOSI https://www.lcosi.com/Land-and-Water-Conservation was dedicated to a formal opening of the Crossroads Trail (see earlier posts).

This short but critical pedestrian/bicycle trail under US24 is the key to connecting trails and recreation on the east side of the Arkansas (and the high-speed highway) to big expanses of Forest Service and BLM public lands on the west side of the valley in southern Lake County. After three years of permitting, engineering design and largely volunteer labor, the Crossroads is now formally open. It's significance to the GARNA-sponsored Stage and Rail project is that we can now proceed to consultations with the BLM, USFS, Lake County and the City of Leadville, leading eventually to designation and signing of some 14 additional miles of the S&R route all the way from AHRA's Hayden Reservoir site to the Mineral Belt Trail in Leadville. Those miles are not yet signed but will lie along open and already available Forest and county public roads. Captions on the images give more details...with Alan Robinson

Volunteers needed! Help build the Crossroads Trail section of the S&RT this weekend, August 7-8. This short connector trail under the US24 bridge is an essential element in safely connecting trails on the east side of the highway to west side public lands. It is also key to providing access to the non-highway route of the Pike National Trail and to eventual designation of the Salida to Leadville regional Stage and Rail Trail 13-mile section from Hayden Reservoir to Leadville. Message us here if interested and for more details.
