Salida reserve and career firefighters recently trained together using a Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control burn trailer, gaining valuable experience attacking live fire in a safe, controlled environment.

Now, Salida Fire is looking for reserve firefighters! Reserves help supplement career staff during vacations and respond to large incidents. With three levels of reserve firefighters and monthly training, all skill levels are welcome.

Salida Fire is constantly putting in the work. C Shift getting some solid training in and staying sharp. Staying tuned means staying ready!

Recent moisture and improved fuel conditions have allowed Chaffee County to move to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, effective August 21 at 6:00 a.m.

This is a positive step, but wildfire risk remains. Residents and visitors are asked to continue using caution with any activity that could spark a fire.

🚫 Fireworks remain prohibited.

When the call came in on August 5 for a major structure fire in Villa Grove, SFD's C Shift answered.

Firefighters arrived to find multiple structures threatened and heavy fire conditions. Alongside our mutual aid partners, crews worked tirelessly in extreme heat and challenging conditions to protect what they could and keep the fire from spreading further.

This incident was a reminder of the risks firefighters face every time they step off the apparatus. During operations, one SFD firefighter sustained a non-life-threatening injury.

When neighboring departments and communities need help, we answer the call. That's what the fire service is built on. We're proud of the work done by C Shift and grateful to all of the agencies that responded and worked together during this incident.

SFD personnel included: C-Shift Lieutenant Brian Jefferson, A-Shift Lieutenant Andy Majeski, Firefighter Tyler Oster, Probationary Firefighter Matt Kelly, and Reserve Firefighter Scott Papich.

Our crews recently returned after spending 21 days assigned to the Aspen Acres Fire. Shortly after returning home, they were deployed again—this time to South Dakota to assist with the Song Dog Fire and the Rock Creek Fire.

We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our firefighters as they continue supporting wildfire suppression efforts wherever they're needed. Stay safe, and we look forward to their safe return.

The South Arkansas Fire Protection District has approved funding to staff a Type 6 wildland fire engine during periods of elevated fire danger.

This investment will allow firefighters to respond more quickly and effectively to wildland fires when conditions are at their most dangerous. Type 6 engines are specifically designed to access remote areas, navigate rough terrain, and provide rapid initial attack on grass, brush, and woodland fires—helping keep small fires from becoming large incidents.

As fire danger increases, having a dedicated, staffed wildland engine ready to respond enhances the safety of our communities, protects lives and property, and strengthens our ability to support neighboring agencies through mutual aid.

The South Arkansas Fire Protection District's commitment to proactive wildfire preparedness and investing in the resources needed for effective emergency response helps strengthen the region's ability to protect lives, property, and natural resources during periods of elevated fire danger.

The wildland firefighting community is mourning an unimaginable loss following the tragic Knowles Fire. Three firefighters—Sydney Watson, Nicholas "Nick" Hutcherson, and Emily Barker—lost their lives in the line of duty, and two additional firefighters were injured.

While this tragedy did not occur here in Salida, it has deeply impacted the tight-knit wildland firefighting family that extends across the country. Many of us know someone who serves, has served, or has been touched by this profession, making this loss one that resonates far beyond the fireline.

The attached memorial donation flyer shares several ways to support the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the injured firefighters and their loved ones. If you're able, please consider making a donation or sharing this information to help these families during an incredibly difficult time.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends, crews, and everyone in the wildland firefighting community as they honor the lives and service of these heroes.

Our Engine 311 crew from South Arkansas Fire Protection District is continuing to assist on the Willow Fire near Leadville, working alongside our fellow fire service cooperators.

These efforts include strengthening containment lines, protecting nearby values at risk, and working strategically to help limit the fire's spread while keeping firefighter safety as the top priority.

We're proud of our firefighters and all the agencies working together on this incident. Thank you to our community for your continued support and to the families standing behind our crews while they're away from home.

Please continue to give firefighters the space they need to work safely and stay informed through official incident updates.

After 26 years of dedicated service to the Salida Fire Department, Captain Ron Parks has officially retired. His final shift was on Saturday, July 4th, marking the end of an incredible career spent serving and protecting our community.

Thank you, Captain Parks, for you years of leadership, commitment, and service. While we will miss you at the station, we are grateful for everything you have given to this department and are excited to see what this next chapter holds for you. Wishing you all the best in a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement. 🎉
