HOPETREE CONCLUDES FOSTER CARE MONTH WITH PROCLAMATION
Back in May, the city officially proclaimed those 31 days on the calendar as Foster Care Awareness month in the city. This afternoon, Salem Mayor Renee Turk formally handed HopeTree President and CEO Jon Morris a copy of the proclamation knowing that in truth, every month warrants this type of awareness.
Currently, there are 5,760 children in Virginia's foster care system, underscoring the continued need for safe, nurturing, and stable family environments for children and youth across the Commonwealth.
Approximately 30 percent of children in care are ages 16 to 18, and 848 of the 5,760 children were between 16 and 18 years old at the time of their most recent removal, demonstrating the urgent and unique needs of older youth in Virginia's foster care system
Between December 1, 2024, and November 30, 2025, 2,192 children exited foster care.
• 19.5% left care without permanency at age 18
• 34% reunited with family
• 28% were adopted
• 16% exited to relative custody
This emphasizes both the importance of permanency planning and the need for strengthened support for youth aging out of care. We salute HopeTree for caring in this manner since its founding in 1890.
