New library volunteer opportunity: The library is seeking volunteers to meet the READ Bookmobile at elementary schools for one-time visits to first grade classrooms. READ bookmobile visits, supported by the Assistance League of Salem and Keizer, introduce students to the Salem Public Library, give them a library card, and allow them to check out a special book.

After training and completing background checks with both the City of Salem and the Salem Keizer School District, volunteers will drive themselves to meet the bookmobile at pre-arranged visits that take place primarily on weekday mornings or early afternoons. Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are highly preferred.

A group training for potential volunteers will be held on Wednesday, September 16. Invitations to the training will be sent to those who complete the volunteer application and mark READ Bookmobile as their volunteer interest no later than Friday, September 11: https://salemor.gov/library-volunteer

Art is all around us! Today, Three local artists are teaming up to support the Salem Public Library Foundation with library-themed flash sales at their studios. A big “thank you” to Arbor Gray, Ellie Rose, and Krysta Lannigan. To learn more about the project, the history of tattoos, and to participate in the interactive tattoo design activity, visit a special display on Floor 1 at the Main Library through Saturday, September 5.

A portion of the proceeds for each tattoo will be donated to the Salem Public Library Foundation, which supports projects and programs at the Salem Public Library.

* This is a Connected Learning Project from the library’s high school internship, funded by the Salem Public Library Advisory Board.
