The Department of Parks & Recreation provides the citizens of Salem with year round programs and activities, which are geared for all ages. Programs are divided into: Senior Citizens Center, James I. Moyer Sports Complex/Kiwanis Field, Adult Sports, Youth Sports, Community Activities and Special Events. The programs are operated with a full-time staff of 16 and a number of part-time staff such as field maintenance workers, instructors, game officials, summer special event workers, summer interns, sports clinic leaders and volunteer coaches. Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of citizens through professionally managed recreation programs, tournaments, and special events that foster economic impact, promote healthy lifestyles, social interaction, and civic pride among participants.

We are just over one month away from another running of the LewisGale Salem Half Marathon and we could use your help!!!! We can't put on this great event without the thankless people behind the scenes...our volunteers. If you are not a runner but would like to get involved, are part of a church group or organization, need community service hours or just want to give back to the community, then here is a great opportunity!!!! We need lead cyclists, course sweepers packet and t-shirt dispensers, general volunteers and more. Our greatest need are those that are put on the race course to help guide our runners, the course marshals. NEW CLASSES ADDED!

Discover the joy of crochet in this beginner-friendly class! You will learn foundational stiches and how to read standard pattern codes, all while crafting your very own handmade dishcloth to take home. All tools and supplies are included in your registration fee, so you can just show up and start creating. Space is strictly limited to six students to ensure you get plenty of personal, one-on-one guidance.

LET'S MAKE A HAT! Stay warm this winter! Make a cozy hat for yourself or give it as a special gift to a friend. Pick either crochet or knitting to make your hat. You must already know basic crochet or knitting. Go home with a fully finished hat by the end of the course. Supplies are not included in the registration. Once you register, a supple list will be provided. Starting cost for supplies will be around $20, depending on your yarn choice.

SALEM'S MOVIES IN THE PARK RETURNS TONIGHT - SEPT. 4
The Salem Parks and Recreation Department will feature another edition of Movies In The Park TONIGHT at Kiwanis Park tonight.

Salem’s historic multi-purpose facility is located on the corner of Florida and 6th Streets and this venue has been hosting sports and entertainment events in Salem since it opened in 1932.

Tonight's free monthly entertainment features "ELIO". Gates open at 7 p.m. and admission is FREE. The movie will begin at dusk. The Kiwanis concession stand will be open for business (CASH ONLY) and will have FREE popcorn. Bring a blanket and chairs and enjoy a movie under the stars!

Registration is open for our Fall 2026 Dog Obedience Class which will be held on Saturdays from September 26 to October 31. Classes are instructed by Darr Graham and Lewis Redd, both AKC approved CGC Evaluators. This is for any breeds and ages. Please call 540-375-3054 for questions or to sign up!
