International Pollinator Week June 17–23: It's time to celebrate native pollinators!

Native pollinating insects are a diverse group; they include bees of all sizes, flies, wasps, beetles, butterflies, and moths. The State of Missouri recently joined a growing list of entities acknowledging and educating others on the vital role that pollinators play when Governor Mike Parson signed a proclamation officially declaring June 17–23 as 2024 Missouri Pollinator Week, at the request of MPF. The proclamation credits pollinator species as providing significant benefits necessary for maintaining vibrant ecosystems and a healthy economy: https://governor.mo.gov/proclamations/pollinator-week

You can help native pollinating insects and the native plants and natural communities on which they depend by contributing to MPF's prairie conservation work and by planting native plants to support pollinators in your yard and on your property. We have many Grow Native! resources to help you at grownative.org, including this Native Plants for Pollinators page: https://grownative.org/learn/natives-for-pollinators/

Bees and Pollinators presentation

This past Thursday evening's Bees and Pollinators presentation provided excellent information on plants to attract pollinators.
We also learned about plants that provide pollinators with food year-round! For example, the Ozark witch-hazel blooms from January to April and provides pollinators with a midwinter food source.
Several plants were mentioned that are of particular interest to bees, as well as providing color and beauty to your own garden. There are also herbs that you can use in cooking along with giving bees a helping hand. Some examples are lavender, cilantro, sage and thyme.

So, when you're planning your garden, don't forget the pollinators.
