Summer is almost here, and that means it's time to watch for harmful algae blooms in Oregon's lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.
Some algae blooms can produce toxins that make people and animals sick. Children and pets are especially vulnerable.
Before heading out to the water:
✓ Avoid water that looks foamy, scummy, or resembles pea-green paint.
✓ Keep pets away from algae mats along the shoreline.
✓ Don't swim or participate in activities that create water spray if a bloom is present.
✓ Remember: When in doubt, stay out.
Exposure to harmful algae toxins can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, cramps, dizziness, and skin irritation.
