Mayor Dominick Pangallo Proclaims June 8 "Robert Morris Day" in Salem

>WHEREAS: Robert Morris, born in Salem, Massachusetts on June 8, 1823, was one of the first African American lawyers in the United States and a trailblazing figure in the fight for justice, civil rights, and equality under the law; and

>WHEREAS: Morris was a dedicated attorney, abolitionist, and civil rights advocate who used the law as a tool to combat injustice, most notably representing Sarah Roberts in the landmark 1849 case Roberts v. City of Boston, laying the groundwork for the future success of Brown v. Board of Education; and

>WHEREAS: Morris courageously opposed the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, co-founding Boston’s Vigilance Committee, helping liberate freedom seeker Shadrach Minkins, and organizing the Massasoit Guards, a pioneering Black militia committed to protecting the community; and

>WHEREAS: Robert Morris championed the right to equal housing, political representation, and full citizenship, running for mayor of Chelsea in 1866 and continuing to advocate for justice until his death in 1882; and;

>WHEREAS: The legacy of Robert Morris remains a beacon of hope, courage, and progress, and serves as a profound reminder of the power of the law when wielded in the service of human dignity;

>WHEREAS: Salem’s commemorations of its 400+ anniversary in 2026 are an especially meaningful time to recognize outstanding members of its community such as Robert Morris from throughout history;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dominick Pangallo, Mayor of the City of Salem and on behalf of its residents do herby proclaim June 8th, as first declared in 2025, and in perpetuity as

***ROBERT MORRIS DAY***

and encourage all residents to honor and celebrate the enduring legacy of Robert Morris, year after year, a son of Salem, whose commitment to justice continues to inspire generations.

Happy 200th Birthday, Sarah Parker Remond!

Mayor Dominick Pangallo and the City of Salem are proud to announce that, in commemoration of Sarah Parker Remond’s 200th birthday – June 6, 2026 – and in partnership with acclaimed artist Jane Fiorentini Steward, a fine-art giclée reproduction of the 2017 oil-on-canvas portrait of abolitionist and Salem native Sarah Parker Remond will be created for the new Sarah Parker Remond School. The original work currently hangs on the second floor of Salem City Hall directly outside the Mayor’s Office and City Council Chambers.

This exceptional and unique portrait was rendered with care and attention to detail, based on the only known photograph of Ms. Remond. The artist generously donated the original painting to the City of Salem on July 1, 2022, ensuring its place as a lasting tribute to one of Salem’s most influential historical figures.

The forthcoming reproduction will be crafted true to the original work and will be produced as a single-edition artist print. It will be prominently installed in the new Sarah Parker Remond School for the start of the 2026-27 academic year.

This initiative is part of Salem’s 400+ celebrations and serves as a meaningful way to honor Sarah Parker Remond’s 200th birthday. Through this installation, the City aims to deepen public awareness of Remond’s legacy as a pioneering abolitionist, lecturer, and advocate for equality.

“Sarah Parker Remond’s life and work remain profoundly relevant today,” said Mayor Pangallo. “We are so proud to further elevate her legacy as a woman born here in Salem with impact throughout the world, and we are honored to partner with Jane Fiorentini Steward to bring this powerful image into a space where it can inspire students and visitors for generations to come. I am so grateful to City staff and to the artist for helping us to do so. I hope all who walk through the front doors of the Sarah Parker Remond School into the future will be inspired by this portrait to carry forward her advocacy, her ideas, and her hopes for a more equitable world for all.”

Also in conjunction with Sarah Parker Remond’s 200th birthday and Salem’s 400+ anniversary, the City of Salem’s Juneteenth Jam Party in the Park on June 19th will open with a keynote address delivered by History Alive’s historical reenactment of Sarah Parker Remond. Juneteenth Jam takes place Friday, June 19th at 11:30am in Charlotte Forten Park, followed by a full day of fun activities! Boston Strong, our region’s 'beep baseball' team, is coming to Salem for the day! Beep Baseball is baseball for the blind and visually impaired, and is a very exciting sport. Boston Strong is a mixed ages team of adults and kids living with blindness who have learned to hit a beeping ball, run to a buzzing base, and play the game with heart and determination, relying on their ears and athletic skills. Our local team - Boston Strong - includes several Salem residents!

The City of Salem Commission on Disabilities and the Salem MA Police Department join in partnership with Boston Strong Beep Baseball for this fun afternoon of sports. The game will be this Saturday, June 6 at the Salem Common from 11:30-2:00pm. That timeframe will include the scrimmage itself and an opportunity afterward for any interested attendee to try on the blindfold and take a few swings at the beeping ball!

All community members are invited to come down to the Common to support this exciting event!
