Let's talk about cooking outdoors! Whether you're cooking around the campfire or grilling out in your backyard or a park, these tips will help keep you safe.
1. Know before you go: More than 90 percent of forest fires are caused by humans. Consult the campground, park, or forest website before you pack to learn what fire restrictions might be in place. If conditions are windy, protect your fire to prevent sparks from being spread. Never start a fire during thunderstorms.
2. Clear the area: Campfires should be 15-25 feet from tents, overhead branches, and other flammable items. Campers should keep a 3-foot distance from the fire or grill. Leash pets away from the clear area.
3. Manage your fire: Always keep fires inside fire rings or grills. Don't use lighter fluid or other fuels on the fire. Keep a shovel and water nearby in case the fire gets too large. Don't leave a fire unattended, ever. A fire can double in size in just 30 seconds!
4. Drown your fire when you're done: Make a "soup" in the fire pit, drowning the coals or logs with water, then stirring. Repeat until the water is no longer warm. Never bury a fire with dirt or sand only—it can reignite.
Remember, at Marion County parks charcoal can only be used in park BBQ grills. If you want to BYO grill, make it propane or gas fueled grills.
