The 2nd Annual Citywide Garage Sale Day is happening Saturday, June 6! Get ready for a fun day of shopping second hand and meeting neighbors!

Households across the city will be hosting garage sales throughout the day, creating a fun community-wide treasure hunt full of secondhand finds, reuse, and community connection.

Highland Neighbors created an interactive map with participating addresses so shoppers can plan their route. Each sale will have its own hours, and many homes will also have signage posted to help guide shoppers.

Salem was the first city in the state of Oregon to form and recognize Neighborhood Associations in 1972.

This is the Year of Neighborhood Associations in Salem, proclaimed at the May 11 Salem City Council meeting.

"Neighborhood Associations are the cornerstone of community engagement, fostering collaboration, civic price and a shared commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents," the proclamation reads.

The proclamation recognized four Neighborhood Associations celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, Highland Neighbors, SESNA - Southeast Salem Neighborhood Association, Grant Neighborhood Association and Morningside Neighborhood Association.

"These Neighborhood Associaitons have played an instrumental role in uniting residents, promoting inclusivity and addressing local issues through volunteerism, public meetings and partnerships with the City of Salem.

Accepting the proclamation on behalf of their associations are Susan Napack. Celine Coleman, Holly Schiefelbein, Shannon Priem, Pamela Schmidling, Kat Keys and Angelo. Pictured with them are back row, left, Councilors Linda Nishioka and Paul Tigan, and at right Neighborhood Program Manager Irma Coleman and Councilor Irvin M. Brown.

Everyone who lives, works or owns property in the City of Salem limits is already a member of one of the 17 neighborhood associations. The board meets once a month.

Thanks to Southwest Association of Neighbors (SWAN) for their love and dedication to their neighborhood parks. Earlier this year neighbors learned about a park in their community that could use some attention. Bonham Park on King St S is the original neighborhood self-help park established in 1996 and SWAN friends and board helped reclaim a park bench, pulled weeds, rediscovered original flower beds and polished its park sign. Park neighbors thanked the volunteers for their hard work with free lunch and home baked goods! Yum...

On April 11 SWAN partnered with Solve and City staff (City of Salem Parks Volunteers, 26 neighbors showed up for a major ivy removal at Fircrest Park and renovation of some turf in the park. Neighbors weeded and maintained the new pollinator and bird habitat area, removed 36 plus bags of ivy and rejuvenated a mud and dirt area of the park, SWAN board members send their thanks to staff from the parks department who helped with some supplies and partnership.

If you would like to connect with the SWAN board and learn about upcoming events, they are always up to something, or if you would like to attend one of their monthly neighborhood meetings, visit www.cityofsalem.net/swan. You can also sign up for their email newsletter.

Strong Communities/Strong Neighborhoods.

Salem is proud to be the first city in Oregon and one of the first states in the nation to have organized and actively recognize Neighborhood Associations, since 1972. Strong communities are built on strong neighborhoods where people work and live together. Neighborhood partnerships bring businesses and residents together to create a more livable community with activities and projects designed to meet the unique character of the neighborhood.

The Neighborhood Associations provide a voice for you to participate in government decisions by bringing Salem residents, city officials and representatives to the table. Want to lead a project in your community like a park improvement, a pedestrian safety project, or host a community event? Connect with your Neighborhood Association today or the Neighborhood Program Manager at [email protected].

Salem is home to 17 Neighborhood Associations. If you live, work, or own property within Salem City limits, you are already a member of an association and are encouraged to get involved. And its free!

The work of neighborhood associations will be more rewarding, powerful and less taxing with support of a diverse and strong board. Sign up for your neighborhood's monthly newsletter and stay up-to-date on City news, meeting dates and agendas at www.cityofsalem.net/neighbor today.

Highland Neighbors is bringing back Citywide Garage Sale Day on Saturday, June 6!

The idea is simple: neighbors across the community host garage sales at their homes during whatever hours work for them. If you sign up, we’ll add your address to an interactive map so shoppers can easily see all the participating sales and plan their route.

Participants are also encouraged to put up their own physical signs around the neighborhood on the day of the sale to help guide people to their garage sale.

It’s a fun way to connect with neighbors, clear out items you no longer need, and help good stuff stay in use instead of going to the landfill.

Participation is free, and you can host a sale of any size. Even a small table of items counts. The more homes that join in, the more exciting the day becomes.

If you’d like your sale included on the map, sign up here by May 25th:
