On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln, U.S. Army Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all slaves in that state would henceforth and forever be free.

On this Juneteenth commemoration, the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs looks back to celebrate and honor the service and sacrifice of all veterans who have fought for freedom and equality in our nation and around the world.

No veteran should be without a place to call home, and the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs is committed to ending veteran homelessness in our state.

The new ODVA Houseless Veterans Program collaborates with federal, state, county, and Tribal agencies, veteran services offices, and community homeless service providers to meet the urgent and unique needs of Oregon's diverse veteran communities challenged with housing stability.

In addition to advocating for Oregon veterans experiencing or at risk for houselessness, the program provides direct service to veterans and their families seeking federal and state veterans' benefits, including access to local VA health care, documentation of service, as well as other available state benefits, and local homeless services organizations and low-income assistance programs.

If you or a veteran you know is dealing with homelessness, contact the ODVA Houseless Veterans Coordinator today at [email protected] or visit https://ow.ly/hqTL50XcHKO to learn more.

Oregon Women Veterans: Your voice matters.

The Advisory Committee to the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs (ODVA) has launched a short, confidential survey to better understand the needs, challenges, and priorities of Women Veterans across Oregon.

Oregon Women Veterans are one of the fastest-growing veteran communities in the state, and their experiences play an important role in shaping future services and support. The survey takes approximately five minutes to complete, does not collect personal identifying information, and will remain open from June 1–30.

Women Veterans statewide are encouraged to participate, and community partners are invited to help share the survey within their networks.

Learn more and take the survey online by visiting https://oregondva.com/2026/06/01/advisory-committee-to-odva-launches-statewide-survey-for-women-veterans/

The Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs proudly recognizes and respects Tribal sovereignty and values our strong partnerships with Oregon's Tribes. Through annual Tribal Veteran Advocate Training and outreach events, ODVA is dedicated to honoring Tribal veterans and raising awareness about the benefits and services available to them.

Tribal members have one of the highest records of military service per capita of any ethnic group. Oregon's Native American communities have a rich tradition of honoring and supporting veterans. Because of their service, Tribal veterans and eligible dependents may qualify for a wide range of state and federal benefits, including:

—Healthcare (including behavioral health and dental care)
—Monetary compensation or pension
—Education benefits
—Housing support and more!

ODVA is here to help Tribal veterans access the support they've earned. If you or a Tribal veteran you know wants to learn more, connect with ODVA's Tribal Veteran Coordinator by emailing [email protected] or visiting our website: https://ow.ly/gOW350Vg4jG.

On this day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution declaring the creation and design of the U.S. flag. It proclaimed “that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."
May the flag forever wave over our nation, proudly protected by Veterans who have bravely fought for our freedom.
