On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln, U.S. Army Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all slaves in that state would henceforth and forever be free.
On this Juneteenth commemoration, the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs looks back to celebrate and honor the service and sacrifice of all veterans who have fought for freedom and equality in our nation and around the world.
