As students return to classrooms, we’re asking everyone to help make the trip to and from school a safe one.

For students, remember the basics: wear your helmet when riding a bike or scooter, use crosswalks, and stay alert when crossing the street.

For drivers, please remember that school zones are busy again. Slow down, watch for students near schools and neighborhoods, and put the phone away while driving. A few extra seconds of attention can make all the difference.

Whether you’re walking, riding, or driving, we all have a part in keeping our students safe.

Slow down. Stay alert. Don’t drive distracted.

Another week of academy is in the books for your Salem Firefighter recruits!

This week focused on hazardous materials response and decontamination. While these recruits may not be operating as hazardous materials technicians anytime soon, every firefighter needs to understand how to recognize hazardous situations, protect themselves and others, and perform basic decontamination when needed.

Of course, academy can't be all work.

Recruits also got a little creative with physical training and found some time for a quick dip in a makeshift water tank built using ladders and tarps. Known as a catch-all or catch basin, firefighters can use these setups to collect water during overhaul and other firefighting operations. This time, it served a slightly different purpose!

With only a few weeks remaining, the finish line is getting closer. Every day of training, every new skill, and every challenge brings these recruits one step closer to serving this great community.

Salem Fire Department, together with our Salem CERT team, had the opportunity to provide fire extinguisher training for the staff at the Salem Boys & Girls Club!

Hands-on training like this helps our community members learn what to do when a small fire occurs—and, just as importantly, when it’s time to get out and call 911.

A big thank you to the Salem Boys & Girls Club for partnering with us and to our CERT volunteers for helping make this training possible! 👏🏻

🔥💨 AIR QUALITY ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON PDT WEDNESDAY

Oregon Department of Environmental Quality Relayed by National Weather Service Portland OR 1112 AM PDT Mon Aug 31 2026

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Quality Advisory, which is IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON PDT WEDNESDAY for eastern Marion County.

An Air Quality Advisory for Smoke has been issued for eastern Marion County. Wildfires burning in the region combined with forecasted conditions will cause air quality to reach unhealthy levels at times through noon Wednesday.

Pollutants in smoke can cause burning eyes, runny nose, aggravate heart and lung diseases, and aggravate other serious health problems. Limit outdoor activities and keep children indoors if it is smoky. Please follow medical advice if you have a heart or lung condition.

This week, your Salem Firefighters trained on hose movements. These trainings are part of the training schedule that the fire departments training staff put together.

Crews rotate through the training grounds during slotted times, allowing them to take time away from calls and other tasks to hone their skills.
