In 1944, American Legion Post 22 removed the names of 16 second generation Japanese American, or Nisei, soldiers from the public honor roll, and hundreds of letters poured in from around the country in reaction. Last year, the Legion donated these letters to the Japanese American Museum of Oregon (JAMO). On March 4, Historian Linda Tamura shares what brought her to these letters during her research into the Hood River Japanese American community. Legion post commander Carl Casey and vice commander Dennis Leonard join the conversation. A selection of the letters are on view at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon as part of the exhibition A Long Road to Travel: The Service of Japanese Americans During World War II, Feb 18 – May 7. For more details about the event at JAMO, visit: https://jamo.org/event/moving-forward-from-community-secrets/.
