City of Salem, New Jersey

City of Salem, New Jersey As we celebrated the 350th anniversary of our historic city, join us to learn about the progress, activities, and meetings.

The town and colony of Salem was laid out in 1675 by a Quaker, John Fenwick, and the community was given permission to choose officers in October 1693. It was incorporated on February 21, 1798, as part of the initial group of 104 townships established by the New Jersey Legislature. On February 25, 1858, it was reincorporated as Salem City. The name “Salem,” in both the city and county, is derived

from the Hebrew word shalom, meaning “peace”. It is also related to the Arabic “saalam”, also “peace”.

📢 City of Salem Youth Development Mini-Grant Program Update

Due to the overwhelming response and limited funding available, the City of Salem will close the Youth Development Mini-Grant application period on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 4:00 PM. Applications received after that time will not be considered during this funding round.

We want to sincerely thank every organization, business, and community member who submitted an application. We have been encouraged by the creativity, passion, and commitment shown toward serving Salem's youth and families.

Our original goal was to announce awards sooner; however, because of the volume of applications received and our commitment to conducting a thorough and fair review process, award decisions and notifications are now expected early to mid next week.

We are working as quickly as possible to complete the review process, execute grant agreements, and distribute funding so that selected organizations can begin delivering their programs without unnecessary delays.

Thank you for your patience and for your continued investment in the youth and families of the City of Salem. We look forward to announcing this exciting first round of funded programs soon.

Salem Area-Wide Plan: Your Voice Matters

Help shape the future of Salem by reviewing the draft Area-Wide Plan and sharing your feedback on redevelopment, economic growth, housing, environmental improvements, and community priorities. Review the Plan and Submit Feedback

Salem Area-Wide Plan Feedback Page

Together, we can create a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant future for Salem.

The City of Salem is working with residents, businesses, community organizations, and stakeholders to create a vision for the future of key redevelopment areas near downtown Salem.

The Salem Area-Wide Plan examines environmental conditions, redevelopment opportunities, housing needs, market trends, and economic development strategies. The goal is to transform vacant, underutilized, and brownfield properties into assets that support jobs, housing, businesses, recreation, and a stronger quality of life for current and future residents.

Your feedback will help guide future investments, redevelopment projects, grant opportunities, and community priorities. Whether you live, work, own property, operate a business, or simply care about Salem's future, we encourage you to participate.
