Tonight, the School Committee will come together for another Retreat. This is open to all and in person only at Collins Middle School, Room 227 at 5pm. Attaching the agenda but want to highlight our agreed upon norms as School Committee Members. I hope you can join us!

Lead with Respect and Civility
We speak to and about one another with respect, focus on ideas rather than individuals, and treat staff, colleagues, or community members with kindness and thoughtfulness.
This one is critical for us to be able to cogovern as effectively as possible. I'm glad its the first norm.

Ensure Equitable Participation
We make space for all voices, check in with members who are quieter, center marginalized perspectives, and avoid dominating conversation or engaging in argumentative repeated back and forth exchanges.

Communicate Transparently and Prepare Thoughtfully
We provide information in advance, avoid discrediting or targeting anyone, and come to meetings prepared so that discussions can be productive and informed.

Practice Humility and Accountability
We normalize apologies, own our mistakes, and manage our own discomfort without placing it on others. We reserve judgment and avoid jumping to conclusions.

Build Trust Through Clear Processes
We recognize that unwritten rules can be harmful; we commit to clear, consistent procedures and open communication to prevent misunderstandings and ensure fairness.

Strengthen Collaboration with Administration
We maintain respectful, direct relationships with the Superintendent, share questions in advance when possible, and inform leadership about school visits to support coordination and mutual trust.

Local activists congratulate the City of Salem on its decision to terminate its contract with Flock Safety. πŸ’₯ This decision is the result of an eight-month organizing effort by a coalition of local grassroots organizations and concerned Salem residents in partnership with the ACLU of Massachusetts. πŸ’₯

Salem's announcement that it was severing ties with Flock Safety was welcome, but it erased the role local activists played in the city's decision.

I learned a lot throughout this superintendent search process, and I'm deeply grateful to Dr. Jorge Allen and Mr. Andrew Bott for the time, vulnerability, and interest they showed in our school district. Salem was lucky to have three exceptional finalists, each bringing different experiences, perspectives, and strengths to the table.

I supported the appointment of Dr. Thomas Welch because I believe his unique combination of instructional leadership, experience leading an urban school district as a regional superintendent, commitment to multilingual learners and dual language education, long-term systems thinking, and vision for innovation best aligns with where Salem is today and where we are headed.

Congratulations to Dr. Thomas Welch. I look forward to working together to build an innovative, equitable, and joyful school district where every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Dr. Thomas Welch was appointed as the Superintendent of Salem Public Schools Wednesday night at a special meeting of the Salem School Committee.

This was fun!! Thank you for the invite Jeff.
