When Lauren and Ryan came to St. Francis with their seven-year-old son, Kyle, they were determined to build a better future. As our Housing Team got to know the family, a heartbreaking reality emerged: Kyle had never attended a single day of school. Lauren had seen the headlines, watched the news, and was terrified of school violence. Keeping Kyle home felt like the only way to keep him safe. St. Francis Navigator, Noemi heard her—not just as a navigator, but as a mother. Drawing on her background as a teacher, Noemi stepped in with compassion and determination.
Noemi discovered something remarkable: despite never being in a classroom, Kyle was already testing near grade level.
To help ease the family’s fears, Noemi arranged a private visit to Kyle’s future school. Noemi and the family explored the campus and met his prospective teacher. Together they listened to every concern with patience and care—answering questions, building trust, and helping Lauren and Ryan begin to imagine something different. That trust changed everything.
Today, Kyle walked into his very first classroom—with Noemi right beside him and ready to start his first school year.
Noemi will continue to meet with Kyle nurturing his love of learning. Moments like this don’t happen by accident. They happen because children are surrounded by people who show up with compassion. 🩵
