School buses are back on the road, and keeping our kids safe is a responsibility we all share. Slow down and stop when lights are flashing, watch for children at bus stops, and give buses plenty of room to load and unload safely.

Parents, walk your younger kids to the stop and review bus safety rules together. A little patience and awareness from all of us can prevent tragedy.

July is National Park and Recreation Month. Indiana offers plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors — swim, fish, or camp at Delaney Park, let the kids play at Riley's Place in DePauw Park, take on a stretch of the Knobstone Trail, Indiana's longest hiking trail, or bike and walk the Monon Trail in central Indiana. This is a great month to get out and enjoy what Indiana has to offer.

Before the Fourth of July fun starts, it's worth taking a moment to make sure everyone stays safe. Here are a few simple reminders to keep the celebration going all night long.

✨ Always have water nearby, just in case.
✨ Don't allow kids around fireworks without close adult supervision.
✨ Never aim fireworks toward people, animals, or dry areas.
✨ Duds happen, don't go back to relight them. Soak and toss.
✨ Once it's lit, back up and give it space.
✨ Know your local rules, some areas restrict or ban consumer fireworks.

With extreme temperatures in our area, the City of Salem is opening a temporary cooling center at the Senior Center (1705 N. Shelby St.). The center will be open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week from 1:00 PM–4:00 PM. Stop by, cool off, and stay safe during the heat.

Today is Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Unfortunately, elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation happen more often than many people realize. Warning signs can include unexplained injuries, sudden changes in behavior, isolation from family and friends, poor living conditions, or unusual financial activity.

Take time to check in on the seniors in your life and speak up if something doesn't seem right. Looking out for one another is one of the best ways we can protect our older residents.

The City of Salem is excited to announce partnership with the Washington County Community Foundation to launch an inclusive Washington County Community Calendar. This is a digital platform designed to serve as the definitive hub for local events, helping Salem residents stay connected while giving non-profit corporations a valuable tool to spread awareness about their offerings and community focused activities.

Recognizing the need for unified, easily accessible scheduling resource, the City of Salem and the Washington County Community Foundation collaborated to build a platform that bridges the gap between event organizers and the public. From festivals and farmers market events to small business drives, the calendar provides a streamlined space to showcase everything Washington County has to offer.

To ensure the calendar is as robust and comprehensive as possible, The City of Salem encourages all local organizations, clubs, schools and businesses hosting community events to get in touch. If you are planning an event open to the community, simply reach out the Mayor’s office with details. Additionally, post your announcement to social media as an “Event” not just a post. This will ensure the Community Calendar will update automatically.
