Sainte Geneviève has 27 surviving French Colonial vertical-log buildings, but only three were built using the exceptionally rare poteaux-en-terre method, with the vertical timbers forming the exterior walls set directly into the earth rather than resting on a sill or foundation.

Vertical-log buildings exist elsewhere, including other examples in Sainte Geneviève, but they are not necessarily poteaux-en-terre. Only five known surviving houses of this specific French Colonial type remain in North America.

Three are in Sainte Geneviève: the Bauvais-Amoureux House, Bequette-Ribault House and Vital St. Gemme Beauvais House. Built between about 1792 and 1808, all three still stand in their original locations.

Together with Sainte Geneviève’s other surviving French Colonial vertical-log buildings, they form the greatest concentration of this architecture in North America.

Three of only five known surviving French Colonial poteaux-en-terre houses in North America still stand in Sainte Geneviève, Missouri.

Sainte Geneviève is home to 27 surviving French Colonial vertical-log buildings. What makes these three especially rare is not just the use of vertical logs, but the way they were built: their closely set wooden wall posts were placed directly into the earth. That is what poteaux-en-terre means.

Many of Sainte Geneviève’s other historic vertical-log buildings use a different method, with the vertical timbers resting on a sill or foundation rather than being set into the ground. The surviving poteaux-en-terre houses are the Bauvais-Amoureux House, Bequette-Ribault House and Vital St. Gemme Beauvais House.

Together, they are part of what gives Sainte Geneviève the greatest concentration of surviving French Colonial vertical-log architecture in North America.
