Woo-wee! We sure had a blast celebrating a big milestone for the Tampa Bay Environmental Restoration Fund last night!

Through TBERF, we have granted over $10 million to more than 100 projects—all in service to our estuary! This grant program has had a measurable impact on protecting and restoring our watershed’s native habitats, as well as understanding the estuary through research.

🌊 Stormwater = the liquid that runs off of buildings, roads, and other people-made things that drains into waterbodies after precipitation (e.g., rain); often polluted by chemicals that washed off the roads or lawns it flowed over.
♥️ Stewardship = caring for our natural resources through sustainable and responsible practices

🌅 Stormwater Stewardship = doing your part to keep pollutants, pet p**p, trash, and other waste out of stormwater, including supporting stormwater-related programs

Residential fertilizer restrictions go into effect today to limit excess nutrients from washing away with the summer rains. Runoff carries the nutrients from your yard to the bay, where they worsen water quality and hurt wildlife habitat. Picture this: spending the morning planting native plants in a beautiful preserve in Tampa Bay. 🤩🌱🪏

Help us improve water quality and create habitat for many fish and wildlife species on June 5 as we restore the Keen wetland in the northeastern section of Duette Preserve. (What a great way to celebrate American Wetlands Month!) Afterward, we will tour the site and discuss how this TBERF-funded restoration project is designed to improve the water that eventually flows into Lake Manatee. Lunch will be provided by the Tampa Bay Estuary Program.

This opportunity is suitable for volunteers of all ages.

**Please dress for full sun outdoors and wear closed-toe shoes that you do not mind getting wet or muddy. Be sure to bring plenty of water and wear a hat. We will provide all tools for planting.**

Blue and green spaces have a powerfully positive impact on our health. Blue spaces are particularly beneficial to our mental health—just listen to Chris Clark's compelling words about SCUBA diving. But access to and feeling welcome in these places differs for different people.

We stan a seagrass safe king*

Being seagrass safe is easy as 1, 2, 3:

1️⃣ Stay in deep water (know how to spot and avoid areas that are too shallow for your boat's draft; 😎 polarized lenses, charts, and channel markers help)
2️⃣ Trim up the motor in shallow water (Pro tip: turn it off before you trim all the way up)
3️⃣ Pole, push, or troll through shallow areas (if you hit bottom, turn off the motor, trim up, and push/pole/troll instead of powering off to get to deeper water)

Whether fishing or cruising, following these recommendations will help you keep your boat and the fragile habitats below the waves, safe.

Extra credit! Be seagrass safe at home, too. Spend more time relaxing on your boat instead of fertilizing your lawn this summer. We know we'd rather tackle fish instead of yardwork. 🎣
