Much gratitude to the Florida chapters of Tuskegee Airmen Inc. who honored two women during this the 2nd year of Florida’s official Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday of March. I got to share my mother’s story as one of 28 nurses who served in the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) at Tuskegee Army Air Field (TAAF)where the future Tuskegee Airmen were in pilot training during World War II. Former police chief and U.S. Congresswoman Val Demings shared the story of Callie Gentry who was a member of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) and served as a clerk and headquarters stenographer at Lockbourne Army Air Base (LAAB) in Ohio under Colonel Benjamin Davis, Jr. who was in the first graduating class of Tuskegee Airmen. A minted coin with the images of the two women were shared. That was a special moment for me as the daughter of the former 1st LT Louise Lomax. Both women are considered DOTAs, Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen. Airmen Airmen Nurses Army Nurses Army Air Field

I join others in honoring America's veterans by giving a special shout out to those in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. These nurses provide healthcare to military families and soldiers stateside and abroad. Just a note that a documentary about the U.S. Army Nurses who served at Tuskegee Army Air Field during World War II may be available in the next couple of years. Preparation is beginning. Stay tuned.

Even though my book about the Tuskegee Army Nurses came out two years ago, I continue to research and find out more about them which I add to their bios on the TuskegeeArmyNurses.info website. I am hoping to start work on a documentary about the nurses soon.

The Department of the Army was dragging its feet on allowing women of any race into the Army Nurse Corps (ANC)–that is until the United States entered World War II and there was a shortage of nurses. Approximately 28 black nurses served at TAAF. The segregated Army had limited black ANC nurses to ...

A friend of mine recently introduced me to the Tubman African American Museum in Macon, Georgia. It is an awesome facility that I would suggest adding to your visitation list. There is a room with the history of African Americans who served in the U.S. Military. I hope to share the story of the African-American women who served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II there later in the year. The museum would like donations on the uniforms these women wore doing their work and in formal attire to add to the exhibit. If you have any memorabilia that would have been worn by these nurses from World War II, consider donating them to the museum so they can be shared with those who visit there. There is also a Tyler Perry room at this museum that is inspiring as well. You could contact the Education Coordinator George Crawley at 470-217-6522 or the Director of Exhibitions, Jeff Bruce, at 478-845-7440 to discuss.
