PED, DSI, and Public Works are the three departments residents and small businesses reach out to my office about the most when they need extra support navigating city systems.
Today, I was on a very difficult call with Ethiopian small business owners who have been working with DSI staff since last year to explore extending business hours during an international tournament that will bring thousands of visitors to the Twin Cities. Unfortunately, the city was unable to move the request forward because our government procedures require at least 8 weeks to pass an ordinance amendment.
This is something that potentially could have been accomplished with earlier coordination and clearer guidance. Even as a City Councilmember, it can be challenging navigating state statutes, city ordinances, staffing shortages, and high turnover across departments.
That’s why seeing this new position posted gives me hope. We need dedicated people inside city government who can help create clear structures, transparent processes, and systems that everyday residents and business owners can actually understand.
People come to the city seeking guidance and support. They should leave feeling heard, respected, and supported regardless of their race, ethnicity, language, or background.
If you are a natural problem solver with a heart for helping people reach their goals, consider a career in public service with the City of Saint Paul. We need people willing to roll up their sleeves and help make life better for our businesses, residents, and communities. Stpaul.gov/careers
