What inspires us in this work?

Watch this conversation, “Nobody Ends Homelessness Alone,” between Alfonso Wenker and MICH’s executive director Cathy ten Broeke: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWXaRAGxEBU

Through personal stories framed by Cathy’s decades of service, they discuss what this moment asks of us as leaders within our own spaces, why home is foundational in our lives, and the kind of community that makes sure no one faces homelessness on their own.

Through our Crossroads to Justice strategic plan, the Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness committed to five bold Results that will drive significant movement towards housing, racial and health justice.

Result 4 states, “People facing homelessness have access to housing options that meet their needs and honors their choices.”

Four key Strategies support this Result:

🏘 Fund and develop a variety of housing options with fewer restrictions and barriers.
🏘 Increase access to rental assistance and vouchers.
🏘 Improve navigation to get people into housing.
🏘 Increase access to supportive services to sustain housing.

It was good to be with community in Saint Louis County the last few days!

Thank you to Range Mental Health Center (based in Hibbing) and Range Transitional Housing (based in Virginia) for sharing how your housing and health programs are supporting our neighbors who have faced homelessness. Your dedication to service and dignity in the midst of growing and changing needs is so apparent!

We were also honored to participate in the Saint Louis County Continuum of Care meeting and hear how providers across the region are collaborating to get our neighbors home. Spaces like this let us learn with and from one another and strengthen our collective response to homelessness and housing insecurity.

We appreciate all that is being done on The Range to build housing, racial, and health justice for people facing homelessness!

Nearly 5,000 Minnesotans benefit directly from federal investments in supportive housing. These funds keep our neighbors in their homes, support local economies, and reduce strains on our emergency rooms, police departments, schools, and jails.

Minnesotans need the federal government as a strong, reliable partner committed to these proven solutions that prevent and end homelessness.

It’s always about people.

Real people with real stories and real dreams and real concerns – seeking to find real solutions to homelessness.

At the Northeast Minnesota Continuum of Care annual meeting, we had the honor of hearing from two people on different sides of the table about what it took to get one of them home.

One of the women had experienced homelessness until she got connected with housing and supportive services after participating in the annual Point-in-Time Count. Her bravery to step forward and her resilience to stick with the process means she’s living in a place of her own now, instead of in her car.

The other woman made sure she stayed connected to the process and saw her as a full person. They built trust and rapport through the ups-and-downs. Her humanity and empathy made a lasting impact on the first woman as she navigated complex systems knowing she had someone on her side.

Strengthening systems – like Continuums of Care, Coordinated Entry, and supportive housing – is essential to ending homelessness. But in the end, the true purpose of a system is to serve real people.

Because it’s always about people.

“You wake up in the morning and say, ‘What am I going to do today?’ And that’s a lot easier than waking up and saying, ‘Where am I going to live today?’”

Supportive housing changes lives and communities for the better.

We’re THRILLED to welcome Tate Pashibin (she/her) to the MICH staff!

Tate will be serving the people of Minnesota as an Executive Assistant on our team. In this role, she will provide executive-level administrative support and coordinate the day-to-day operations and processes of the Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness.

Tate brings over five years of experience in local government and non-profit work. When she’s not working, she enjoys jigsaw puzzles, cats, and spending time in nature.

Join us in thanking Tate for being part of our work leading the State of Minnesota's efforts to move toward housing, health, and racial justice for people facing homelessness!

The lack of access to affordable housing is the number one reason people are homeless.

But we also know that harmful policies past and present are part of the “why” of homelessness, too.

Slavery, segregation, red-lining, and mass incarceration rob our Black neighbors of the ability to build wealth and live where they want to live.

Broken treaties, boarding schools, genocide, and forced relocation disenfranchise our Native relatives by stealing land and tearing at community.

Histories of trauma continue to ripple into today.

MICH is committed to collaboration with communities that have been historically oppressed and excluded to build new pathways to housing, racial, and health justice for people facing homelessness.

The truth is that permanent supportive housing is proven, it’s cost-effective, it’s compassionate, and it’s what will help end homelessness.

The truth is that we also know what DOESN'T end homelessness.

Tickets and fines. Criminalization. Forced treatment. Institutionalization. Incarceration. Cuts to critical funding.

Yet this is what our unhoused neighbors are facing across the country. This is what some of the loudest voices are pushing as part of their agenda of fear and division.

Don’t fall for it!
